Show Messenger PS Enterprise, Thursday, Apil 9, 1981 3 Search and Rescue Patrol raises $7,200 from generous KMTI by Pat Mellor and Kom Nordetl Approximately $7,200 has been raised to date by the Sanpete County Sheriffs Search and Rescue Patrol, thanks to the generosity of KMTI station owner Doug Barton, who last Wednesday turned over the radio station to the posse for the day. Patrol members sold advertising time to customers and retained all the proceeds from ads sold for the period from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Patrol members also did all the on-aannouncing that day, with hilarious results. Another special highlight of the day was a solo performed a capella by Sheriff Kennard Anderson. County Attorney Paul Frischknecht pledged $100 to the fund if Anderson would sing the song he sings at camps on the mountain, and after a long period of Anderson obliged. The profits from their day in show biz will go to provide medical jumpkits for each Search and Rescue sector and equipment for the posses snow cat, which members have repaired through hundreds of donated man-houof labor. Sanpete County Search and Rescue is a organization which functions for and under the direction of the sheriffs office. Its 35 members are divided into sectors and the posse may be called out sector by sector as needed, providing the sheriff with men familiar with each geographic area of the county and particularly the mountain areas. Posse members purchase all their own drive equipment. Each has a vehicle, a high band radio, uniforms, and emergency equipment, some of which they have purchased because they knew the county did not have funds to do ir rs non-prof- four-whe- el so. To date the posse has earned its own way with little or no help from city or county governments. The men meet twice a month and accept assignments to patrol with sheriffs officers, or they patrol the countys farm and mountain roads alone with no backup except the assistance they can call out on the radio. The men'are highly trained in search and rescue procedures and all are required to meet certain police requirements in order to maintain their membership in the patrol. Patrol members are trained in first aid, deseret and mountain rescue procedures, vehicle extraction, tracking and firearms use. Special procedures for crowd and traffic control, airplane disasters, roadblocks, patrol duties, and many other skills must be acquired by each member. Patrol assistance on searches and duties such as Mormon Miracle traffic control consume 700 to 800 hours each year. Moronis residents recall the days spent at the side of Wales Reservoir a few years ago by Search and Rescue patrol men who refused to give up until the victims were recovered. Many residents know the patrol from returning a lost or overdue loved one. Lost hunters have frequently been brought to safety by patrol members. Stranded and motorists have been assisted by the patrol in the mountains many times. The patrol has attended heart attack victims, returned lost children, assisted at fires, worked at ball games, parades, the county fair, and a host of other situations. Patrol members act in emergencies and civic affairs with happy and willing hearts, motivated by a sincere desire to help their friends and neighbors in an emergency. Search and rescue is done on a county, national and state basis, for the same reasons. Sanpete County Search and Rescue is ready and willing to help seven days a week, 24 hours a day, whenever the sheriff calls us out, say its 35 members. If you think you need us, call the sheriffs office and do it as soon as you think you need us. Wed rather go out on numberless false alarms than get called out just once, too late. snow-mobile- rs ' Responsibility of Training Children by W. R.
