Show Hiiuia . . . by Mai Call The reason you dont take your wife on a convention trip with you is because it doubles the expense and cuts the fun in half, goes the saying. Take it from me, taint true! Last weekend 1 attended the National Newspaper Assn, annual convention in San Diego. For one reason or another Beth decided not to go. So 1 found that the opposite is true. Without her, the fun was cut in half (at least) also. And considering to Tijuana it my shopping trip probably would have cost less had she been with me. It w as an enjoyable and educational experience, and I learned much which should help us to give you a better paper. The most fun part was a shopping "spree to Tijuana. How gleefully the shopkeepers must have rubbed their hands as our seven Gray Line Tour busses disgorged their passengers with their American dollars. 1 guess 1 must be a real pigeon I don't really enjoy dickering over price but inasmuch as thats the way its done in Tijuana, 1 decided to participate. 1 didnt really need anything but figured 1 needed some kind of a souvenir and I felt 1 needed to give Beth some slight token of appreciation for letting me go and the kids always expect a small memento. So I sauntered down the street. First thing that caught my eye was an onyx chess set. Lloyd and Kelly are both chess buffs to I thought Id make one gift do for both. First 1 decided that it was worth perhaps $15 (it was an attractive set). "How much? I asked. Thirty dollars, he said, reaching for a box to put it in. "Well, I think Ill look in a few more stores. "For vou I could make a special price of $27.50." I think I could buy it in San Diego for Volume 93 Number 20 Fern Mortensen Is Candidate for Depostions will be taken in Sixth District Court at the Sanpete County Courthouse here today and Friday in a civil action involving the North Sanpete School District, plaintiffs, and several residents of the district who are accussed of harassment and interfer- ence w ith the school district in its legal operations. Smith and board members Calvin Allred, Ftn. Green; Mark Cook, Moroni; Bryant Madsen, Fairview; David Peterson, Mt. Pleasant, and I said, wiping my brow. As I walked out, he said, Hurry back, in a tone which made me feel like a real pigeon. Down the street a bit I ducked into a high class" store to buy Beth a bottle of perfume. (Thats one gift we can both enjoy!) The lady clerk was very helpful. She sprayed my wrist with one fragrance, my other wrist with another, both palms, most of my fingers. (Later when I met one of my on the street, he asked, Why do you smell so strange? I've been in a perfume store, I said. "A likely story, he replied, suggestively.) When I finally decided on Chanel 19, she brought out a thimble-size- d bottle, How much? I asked. she said, Fifteen dollars, pointing to the label on the bottle. I'll give you twelve, I said. Our prices are not negotiable, she said haughtily as she started to put the bottle back in the cupboard. I forked out the $15, took the bottle and left sheepishly. A few minutes later, down the street, I saw the exact same chess set as the one Id purchased. It was marked On Sale at $7.95. Thats why Im a pigeon. After this the hard part starts: 48 hour shifts are divided among the EMTs for duty. What does duty mean? It means 48 hours of tension, staying available. If you are employed anywhere. It means leaving at any time and losing your pay. If you are a mother, it means have a tender stand by with you. This is usually an older child, neighbor or other relative. You have to make arrangements ahead of time, because when the paper signals, you have to leave right now. You have no idea how long you will be gone anywhere from two hours to ten hours. y Your hours amount to 1200 hours to 1800 hours a year. So the family has to be on call and ready to take over when you leave. So many times its necessary to say, No, I cant go, Im on duty, or No, you cant do this or that because I need you, Im on duty. You learn to live after duty is over. Time is very important and all arrangements have to be made ahead of time.
