Show What Do You Know About Price of Food? By Jack Herring Sanpete County Agent Manti South ELAINE When it comes to rail portation, it takes twice as long now to move perishable food from the west to the east coast as it did 20 years ago. Hows that for progress? At any given time, an average of nearly 90 of the railroad cars in the U.S. are standing still, empty. So more food must be carried by trucks, driven by drivers who may earn $25,000 a year. Mainly because of laws , up to 40 of the trucks on the road run without a load. Cost: another 250 million. A simple item like an orange is handled 17 separate times from tree to table. Apples are packed in containers of 40 different sizes and shapes, none of which fit a standard grocery shipping pallet. The 8,000 most common items In a food warehouse are packaged in 2,650 different sizes, reducing automated handling. Federal, state and local regulations add unnecessary millions of dollars to the cost of food. Packaging and inspection requirements add another big boast to your grocery prices. This is just a sample, as there are a lot of other things which are just about as absurd. The dairyman just recently took a $2.00 per hundredweight cut in his farm price for milk, but you dont see any change in price in the grocery store. The beef man is taking a beating; the turkey raisers are really in a bad way; the sheep, swine, and other farm product producers are not much better Of the total amount of money that the average family spends on food each year, the farmer, directly or indirectly, may end up with 35 to 40 of your food dollar. He takes all the risks, has no guarantee that he can or will produce a crop, does it all on borrowed money at interest rates, and high fertilizer and production costs. The farmer would probably be high better off to take his investment money, go to Las Vegas and shoot dice. He wouldnt be gambling any more than he already is and at least he would get to see a good show or two in the process. During the past ten years labor costs in the food industry have soared to a staggering which is four times faster 80 than productivity. Considerable money could be saved by breaking meat into retail cuts at the packing plant, but butchers unions wont allow this. Costs could also be cut if meat, bread, and other items could be stocked in the grocery shelves by grocery clerks instead of by highly paid delivery truck drivers. OIL IN THEM THAR HILLS? off. You can only blow a balloon so big and then it has to burst, and when it does, the noise will be heard and felt around the world. The inflation bubble has to burst sometime, and the quicker it happens, the better off we will be, because we can then at least pick up the pieces and start over again, from scratch, with a monetary system backed by gold and silver, Instead of just funny money which is not worth the paper its printed on. GEOLOGISTS for the Amoco Production subsidiary of Standard Oil Company (Indiana), like this Wyoming explorer, are expanding the search for oil and natural gas to the remote corners of the continent.
