THE NEWSETTE REPORTS The news of Wendell Nessens death, coming so quickly on the trail of his personal letter to you good Centerville people through the columns of The Newsette, makes us so grateful that we were privileged to contribute in some measure to his enjoyment before tragedy struck. Likewise, every one of his friends and neighbors who has helped to brighten his lonely hours while far away in the service of his country by making it possible for him to receive news of his home town and his buddies, should experience a warm glow of thanksgiving. Wendell is gone, but there are four score boys and girls still living who look forward eagerly each month to read the news from home. Help us to keep The Newsette going out to them. Williams of the High Priest Quorum related some very interesting stories of early pioneer life in Sacrament Meeting, July 30. Wendell Hodson, of Layton, brother of Mrs. Maxine Reeves, has been killed in action in the Southwest Pacific. He graduated from Davis High in 1942. Quorum conducted the Sacrament Service August 13. Elder Elliot Randall was the speaker, and Allan Beers and David 0. Noakes were in charge. The Elders In Sacrament Meeting August 20, Dr. Adam S. Bennion delivered a most interesting talk on the ten important things in life. Elder Roy F. Hatch, U.S.M.C., and Elder Leon Reeves, U. S. Army, also gave interesting talks on their d, Ward Statistics Birth: A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Claude Kirkland. Horse Show A very interesting and successful Horse Show was presented Aug. 16 and 17 by the Davis County Saddle Horse Association as part of Davis County Days at the high school grandstand. Making it a perfect success, four of our own sportsmen took off six of the ribbons. Black Magic, a black mare owned by Dr. G. W. Buchanan of Farmington, won the Junior Fine Harness event with Vic Adams, Sr., as the rider. Vic Adams, Jr., riding Verde three-year-o- ld Blessed: Bryant Stewart Mitchell, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Leonard Mitchell; Bernard Croft Rollins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sterling C. Rollins; and La Mar Eldon Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Vinton Smith. Baptized: Ronald Lester Beers, Rollins Cook Elaine Williams. Noel and Lillian Ordination: Gordon E. Cardall was ordained a priest. Monday, August 14, Mrs. Ruth Tingey was hostess to the Literature, Music and Art Club. Mrs. Blood gave a review on Music of America. Gold, a five-year-o- sorrel mare ld owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jack C. Burgess, took first place in the Handy Jumpers and Road Hack events. chestBeauty Ann, nut mare owned by Mr. and Mrs. Burgess, won the Three Gaited Fine Harness and the Three Gaited Open ridden by Vic Adams, Sr. Beauty Ann has never been beaten in 12 horse events, and Merrill five-year-o- ld Mrs. Mavis Clayton was hostess to members of the Clique Club on Thursday, August 17. Mrs. Dorothy was hostess to Reilly members of the Harmony Club. Topics of current interest were discussed. On August Sheldon 24, A very beautiful wedding took place in the Salt Lake Temple Saturday August 19 when Miss Tecla Holmes became the bride of Captain Richard D. Rees. The ceremony was performed by Pres. David O. McKay. A reception was given in the evening at the home of the bridegrooms mother, Mrs. A. C. Rees, Gilmer Drive, Salt Lake City.
