Show I I c July 17. 2008 1 1MES, M THE MAGNA ESI A At 1 EY NEWS, KEARNS POST 7 I I The Dark Knight well made crime taken By Nathan Unck Rated PG-1- 3 sequences of some menace. 10 out of 10 Before 1 for intense violence and get into the specifics of my review for The Dark Knight. I vv ant to clarify a few things about the film that may help you decide whether the film is for you, and for parents, w hether it is a film that your younger teenager should see. I loved the film on so many different levels, but most of those levels are pretty complex. First of all, 7 !m Dark Knight is more of a crime drama than a comic book movie. There are some teally great action sequences, but a majority of the film's most interesting moments are in the drama among the characters. It is very character driven, and some of the explorations of the characters, mostly the Joker, are very disturbing and downright frightening. The issues that unfold in the film are also very deep and complex: Batman dealing with his id, ego, and superego, wondering what makes him different from any of the villains he is trying to protect Gotham City from; the Joker and his anarchist ideals; and last but not least, Harvey Dent, a new district attorney w ho is brave enough to stand up to any crook or villain in town, until tragedy strikes, and he questions everything that he believes about being good f or bad. I Because of the complexi-- 1 of the story and the y drama, on top of the dark jtl and gruesome nature of the If Joker and his. antics, L ig gest that kids under the age of 16 wait until they are older to see the film to truly appreciate it for w hat it is: a ty P Director Christopher Nolan, who also directed Batman Begins and The the Prestige, also screenplay w iih his brother, Jonathan. Their script is borderline genius. The story picks up a short time after Batman Begins ends. There has been a rise in crime since Batman has appeared on the scene of Gotham, and the courts are full of crime lords and followers ready to take the fall for their bosses. However, newly appointed District Attorney Harv ey Dent, played incredibly by Aaron Eckhart, knows the weaknesses of the criminals and is able to exploit them and put them behind bars. He also is interested in Rachel Dawes, played by Maggie Gyllenhaal, filling in for Katie Holmes from the first film in the series. te However, Bruce realizes that there is a difference between a hero that the people w ant and a hero that the people need. On the other side of the spectrum, the Joker is making it hard for Batman to stick to his rules and beliefs by placing him in very hard situations where he must decide some pretty terrible fates. don't want to discuss the plot anymoie from this point on, since it is getting lost in the plot that is so much fun. The Joker scenes are terrific and terrifying. There are times you laugh at what happens, and then feel sick for laughing at it You get excited to see what he is going to do next, and you also fear what he is going to say enough good things about the acting. As I said, this film is real, ly something else. It is incredibly deep, but terrifyingly gruesome and dark. The rough language is kept to a minimum, but the dark tones really keep it to a high PG-1- 3 rating. Also, along the lines of comic book films, if you want to avoid long lines and would crowded theaters, also recommend Hellhov 2. It was unique and interesting to watch. It wasnt as cheesy as the first film, and there is something fascinating to look at every second. 1 give it an 8 out of 10. 1 again by Christian Bale, is jealous that Dent is moving in on his potential girlfriend, but also knows that he is a good man and that Gotham needs him where he is. In the meantime, a murderous bandit known as the Joker, played brilliantly by Heath Ledger, is tenoiizing the citizens of Gotham and trying to get the support, of Gothanjs. m and ..respect, organized crime ring. With the fall of crime boss Carmine Falcone in Batman Begins, a new boss has literally chewed during those scenes. It was veiy well done. 1 think that there w ill be a lot of best actor or best supporting actor Academy Award talk, but I don't think that it is really a role that would win the award had Heath L edger been aliv e, and I think that he would agree with me on that. It is, however, worth a nomination. Michael Caine as Alfred, Bruce Wayne's butler, and Morgan Freeman, as I ucius Fox, are both incredible in their roles. Once again, Gary' Oldman as 1 1. James Gordon is fantastic. I cant is really helping the city or making it worse. played 1 half of my fingernails off alter-eg-o However, Bruce WayneBatman, do next. his place, Salvatoie Maroni, played by Fric Roberts. The Joker tries to become involved with Maroni's men and tries to talk them into killing Batman, since he is what they all fear the most. However, we soon realize that the Joker really wants to team up vv ith Batman and rule the city. That , of course doesn't sit right w ith our hei o, but it does start a chain of thoughts making Bruce Wayne wonder if his very drama that just happens to hav e a man in a bat suit and a v illain with his face painted like a deranged clown in a handful of amazing action sequences. 1 just really feel that anyone younger than a high school student won't really understand the story as a whole, or what messages it is trying to convey. 1 Seven Brides for Seven Brothers will play at the Empress through Aug. 11.
