Douglas Ac'Hs Editor Mjtheson Junior High School art students brightened their schools sidewalks and gallery space in the Tiger room last month with a Tiger Extravaganza of diawings, sculpture, and chalk art The Chalk Arts Festival was the first ol what it is hoped will be an annual event More than thirty-fiv- e artists as teams or individuals created sixteen different works of art in pastel The dimensions of these pieces were approximately 8x 8 with their subject matter focussing on Respect, Caring, Family, Responsibility, and Trust The schools Community of the event Canng Visual with Art along Mathesons advanced art class with teacher Noemi Hernandez, displaying alebrijes from Mexican folk tradition. Community of Department Caring representative Rebecca Ibarra selected works that most beautifully repiesented the five Community of Caring values Frica Scott took first place for Tiger with Cubs Second place went to the team of Vanessa Garcia and Kandice Ramirez for their depiction of a student being laughed at as he fell down stairs with another student helping him up Sherill Sandberg, representing the Matheson Junior High art club, Tiger Eyes, presented the Award of Excellence of more than si 00 in art supplies to Martssa Ihornell for her painting of Aieatha Fianklin singing of of A cash award $40 was presented to the team R E S PE C T Travis Parkinson, Jordan Winder, and Sam Bush foi their drawings of Tigger and panda bears Honorable mention awards, including pastel supplies, were presented to teams of Whitney Hoops and Miranda Mounts, and Melissa Munoz, Jordan Kinder, and Sabastian Newman, respectively The main art exhibit included the piece by Dyane Sotomayor, ninth grade, that won Best of Show at the Granite District show of student works Art teacher Noemi Hernandez said that the quality of Sotomayors work was far beyond a junior high school level ? - Sr; , z ; ifk t I j .
