This Doug McGregor process is unending. - often marvel at how much some people love themselves. They walk down lovers lane holding their own hand, and yet they covet the approval of others more than their own. These people are high maintenance. Andre Kirelinko is high maintenance. If you talk to him harshly, he cries. All he wants is to be loved and start every game. If you treat him just right, he will score ten points, block a few shots and maybe get a few rebounds. Also he needs a hairdresser. Take it easy on him; he is only six foot ten. Many parents need to be patted on the head and so do their offspring athletes. They say, You just dont understand my son. Coach. Stick him in and he .will come through. Give him another chance. Hes better than that kid you put in for him. I If you get too many prima donnas on one team, you dont win. You always need a few worker bees. You need the players who will do the hard work. If all your players are high main- tenance then the season gets real long. To play a team sport and be successful, you must be a good teammate. If you dont like the drudgi ry of your sport, go buv a guitar and sit under a tree and strum. Dont hang around and be a bad teammate. No one likes the high maintenance player. Every player I ever had was better than some other players and not as good as some of the other players. On a team, we are members of one another. I once played on a baseball team with a great pitcher. He could get em all out if he felt like it. If he wasnt having a good day, he wouldnt throw as well as he could. He was high maintenance. High maintenance folks can be wearing. Players in a team game cannot expect special treatment. The coach is busy trying to win games. He hasnt got time to coddle you or pat you on the head. Probably the most visible of the high maintenance crowd are and Paris Hilton. They always want more. If you give them only ,n million they will hold out. I have to take care of my family, they say. That sounds pretty hollow when many of those buying tickets are taking care of tleir families for a measly fifty thousand or less. We Simons says::the best expect and worst from mankind as from the weather. pro-athlet- es |
