He served for a total of 14 years. Bill Spencer: Ashby Bill Spencer served Ashby 22 years as a member of the Fair Board. He served as Fair Board president for two years. He organized the first calf scramble in 1946 which became a popular Fair event for many years. He was chairman of the livestock auction even before serving on the Fair Board. He served as chairman of the Fair parade for many years. He also served as vice president of the Utah Association of Fairs and Shows and was the first manager of the Salt Lake County Equestrian Park. Roene M. Wood: Roene M. Wood holds the longest tenure on the Fair Board of any member since its inception. She was involved with, the Fair as a leader, exhibitor and department manager for 10 years before she joined the board in 1947. She served on the board for 50 years and was affiliated with the Fair for 60 years. For most of the years prior to 1963, she served as vice president and the home economics department director. The next 31 years she served 4-- H V Roene Wood holds the longest tenure on the Salt Lake County Fair Board - 60 years of service. In a ceremony at the Salt Lake County Fair on August 20, eleven Salt Lake County citizens were presented with the Honor of Merit for their years of service to the Fair. Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon hosted the ceremony along with Mike Spencer, chair of the Salt Lake County Fair Board, and Kendyl Bell, the newly crowned Miss Salt Lake County 2006. Following is a list of the honorees and the inscription on the plaques that will hang at the Salt Lake County fairgrounds: Chester and Mae Bello: Chester and Mae Bello were there when the fair w as organized. This husband and wife team served as the first two secretaries of the Salt Lake County Fair from 1937 to 1961. Chester served the first 10 years and Mae served the next 14 years. Chester also served as Fair director during that time and also two terms of service as vice president. Grace Cameron: Grace Cameron served at the Fair for 37 years. She assisted any and all who needed her skills including the presidents, secretaries and department managers. She spent countless hours accepting entries and typing judging sheets. If you called during Fair time, it was Grace who answered the phone. She completed her years of service by serving 1 years on the Fair Board as 1 secretary-treasure- r. Farm Bureau: Since 1937, Farm Bureau has been a sponsor of the Salt Lake County Fair. They have contributed advertising, donations of cash, trophies and awards and continue to sponsor such events as Talent Find. Gene and Karen Fullmer: Gene has been a participant in the Salt Lake County Fair since early childhood. Gene joined the Fair Board in 985 and has served more than 20 years. He has served in many capacities. He served as vice president while the Fair was in Murray. He organizes the boxing match at the Fair each year. He personally held the title of Middleweight Boxing Champion of the World. Karen Fullmer joined the Fair Board in 1985 along with her husband Gene Fullmer. She has served for more than 20 years. Karen organized the annual Fair parade for 13 years. After the Fair moved to South Jordan, Karen served as secretary. She has served in a variety of Fair Board assignments including entertainment and public relations. Ray P. Greenwood: Ray P. Greenwood became a Salt Lake County Fair Board member when he was elected to the County Commission in 1949. He served for 37 years. Most of those years, he 1 served as a County Commissioner. He w'as president of the Fair for eight years. He also served as Mayor of Murray city. Earl E. Howe: Eari E. Howe served 33 years as a member of the Salt Lake County Fair Board - 27 years as president. Many new structures were built and improvements made to the buildings and fairgrounds under his direction. Prior to those improvements, tents, bams and local schools were used for displays. Darrell Smith: - Darrell Smith began his service as a Fair Board member in 1983. He was the last president of the Salt Lake County Fair as we knew it in Murray. He served as president from 1985 to 1997. He was extremely dedicat 100. (Flip) Harmon (class of 1964) who loved horses and served as Director of the Salt Lake County Fair Board for 16 years. He became the Days of 47 Rodeo Chairman developing it into one of the top rodeos in the world. Lonnie E. Paulos, MD (class of 1964) who is a sports medicine doctor pioneering surgical techniques enabling injured athletes to return to their sport quicker. He developed and Endoscopic Arthroscopic Surgery techniques aiding in knee and shoulder injuries. He is the recipient ODonoghue of the Research Award from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Governor Norman H Bangerter (class of 1951) who entered politics by serving in the House of Representatives where he was majority leader and speaker of the house. In 1974 he was elected Governor where his administration focused on education, economic development and efficiency in government. , Millie M Peterson (class of 1962) who served on the State Board of Family Services appointed by Governor Scott Matheson. She is a social worker for Salt Lake Valley Mental Health and is currently serving as TRIVIA - continued from page 1 Utah State Senator. Samantha Lynn Matz (class of 1980) who received her BS in Exercise and Sport Science, her in Masters Exercise Physiology.
