Hines Student Urban Design Competition toured their study sites for the first time on Friday, March 11. Four teams, two representing the Magna site (a 2,208-acr- e portion, the University of Colorado and the University and two of representing the Northwest Planning Area (2,002 acres of Kennecott Land and in the jurisdiction of Salt Lake City, Columbia University and Harvard University) explored the areas to gather more information to be used to fine tune their competition proposals for the final presentation to be held on 1 . He was the guest speaker for the Community of Caring program held at Matheson Junior High. One of the stories Matheson told about his father was when Scott Matheson Sr. was governor, he was invited to speak at the graduation ceremony for West Desert High School. Someone in his staff told Gov. Recently, Scott Matheson Jr. ran for Governor of Utah, but lost to Jon Huntsman Jr. He spoke of this in his speech and said of the experience: I enjoyed running for governor, it was a great experience. I learned a lot about the people of Utah and I enjoyed it a great deal. Advice Matheson gave to those in attendance was: Youre not going to get every job you want, youre not going to get into every school, not eveiything goes your way all the time, but if you dont try nothing will happen, so go for it! Matheson has been active in politics for many years. He said, I got active in politics before my father was elected. According to the criteria set by ULI, the competition site of Magna includes developable (Main Street) areas and (ow ned by Kennecott Land). Main Street is characterized by the competition as the underutilized commercial and civic focal point and defined as a area one block north and one block south of 2700 South. The Northwest Planning Area site extends south of Interstate 80 and east of the impoundment berm encircling the Kennecott Utah Copper Tailings Pond. It is a undeveloped completely site. I am not very interested in politics, but I liked what he said. One of the parents, Kyle Stauffer, said, It was very informative. I think this gave our youth a boost of pride for their school.
