The first thing I noticed was the comment about the "Wal-MaSuperstore, and how it is located in Kearns. I have lived here for over 15 years and the last I checked we lived in West Valley. As in regard to the comment about the speeding on 3100 South, I drive that road every day and I see cops patrolling that road almost daily. The fear we must all carry is that r . j - Letters ail Obesity litigation taking food out of American mouths If America falls, it wont be on the battlefield. It will be in the courtroom. We will succumb to tyranny not at the point of the conqueror's sword, but by the order of the activists lawsuit. A fundamental corruption of our court system, and the oppressive exploitation of that corruption, is the greatest threat to American freedom. Heres an example: The "obesity held last litigation conference weekend in Boston. It was some 120 lawyers, college professors, government regulators and activists scheming to take the food out of your children's mouths. There is an overabundance of food in this country," a New York University professor told a newspaper reporter. And restricting that abundance out of some America-hatin-g is sense of global justice the objective of these thieves and anarchists. They seek to do that by substantially increasing the price of food in this country. They hope to do that by lawsuits, taxes and "settlements against Americas food producers, food companies, restaurant chains - - and fast food outlets. g Just as their attack on the tobacco industry put the price of cigarettes through the roof, their looting of the food industry will also be paid for by consumers. Thats you. That means the food in your familys pantry is going to become wildly more expensive. If the "obesity litigation conference gets its way. The scheme also serves their objectives another way. The philosophy of the left values government power and devalues individual responsibility. It delights in putting people on the government dole and in taxing other people to pay for it That serves their interest of suppressing freedom and centralizing money-grubbin- power. If food becomes more expensive, hunger for moderate earners will increase and so will the rationale for government programs and taxation to alleviate it They will create the problem, and then solve it, and you will be robbed coming and going of both your freedom and your money. This will all be done in the name - of protecting you. They will say that you and the country are being pushed into obesity by evil companies and farmers, and that both must be restrained by huge penalties and taxes. 'Their rationale is built upon three lies: that you are not responsible for your weight, that fat and sugar are addictive, and that food is as dangerous as tobacco. Each of those points is false and ridiculous. But repeated often enough they will be accepted and believed. If not by society, then by the occasional judge or jury. As a foundation for this attack, the national Centers for Disease Control financed a study that claimed being overweight was as dangerous as smoking. Activists at the obesity litigation conference pointed at statistics showing a steady rise in the weight of Americans. Statistics, by the way, which dont necessarily mean anything. Heres what I mean. The most commonly cited number is that currently 65 percent of the American population is overweight Then we are told that in 1960 just 45 percent of Americans were overweight In 1960, for example, America was a nation of young people. The Baby Boomers were babies and their parents were having babies. We were a young country. In 2003, America is a nation of old people. The Baby Boomers are middle-age- d and they had far fewer children then their parents. The great bubble in our population is at a stage of life where nature puts more pounds on them. America is fatter because its average age is older. And because its skirt is browner. Since 1960, the percentage of the is that population has increased. The percentage of the population that is Hispanic has exploded geometrically. The import of that is the fact that blacks and Latinos are statistically far more likely to be overweight than whites. The weight propensi African-Americ- an different and the dramatically larger minority population has a tendency to skew upward the entire populations average weight Many things are causing our increase in weight Inactivity and diet are certainly some of them. We do have a problem with weight in America. But it is not a problem caused by farmers or grocery stores or McDonalds, it is a problem caused by personal condition and choice. If we dont want to be fat then we should have the discipline to keep ourselves trim. Period. These raids on food companies -driven by greed and evil the most essential commodities of our society. The lawsuits must not be allowed to proceed. The Congress must weigh in to protect the only our essential American industry food supply. . ties of the races are - e - - by Bob Lonsberry 2003 Bob Lonsberry is the morning host at KNRS 570 AM 5:30 a.m. -- 10 a.m. He writes a daily internet column at www.lonsberry.com talk-sho- w |
