There are few things worse, in my experience, than school boards. Have you ever caught their net? They lurk around the edges of a lot of good projects and then step in and foul diem up. If they are building a new school, they always make it too small. If its a gymnasium, they carpet the floor. If its an auditorium, it wont seat the student body. Usually new schools are located so the kids have to cross at least one busy thorough fare to get to school; sometimes two. Usually when boards of education start to build, they never consult those who will use the facility. Often, they bring in a group from the community; those who know nothing, or very little, about needs or wants. I know one lady who ran for the school board to get even with a school that her daughter went to. It seems the daughter rebelled and wore black lipstick. Then she stopped going to classes. The mother was notified by the good folks at die school. Oooh Nellie!! The conscientious mother responded by running for the school board. The axe to grind was: Change the boundaries. Bus all the kids across town. That will fix you, she said, as she moved to California. Most school board members have an axe to grind, but this lady was also crazy. Her legacy to the schools was Dont get mad and even again, Lets buy get more busses. I knew another school board member who ran so he could play ping pong. It seems he had this fantasy of beating our basketball coach, who was the best table tennis player between Davis County and the Point of the Mountain. Our man, the board member, got elected at age 25 and spent the next four years honing his ping pong skills; other facets of the curriculum held no interest for our hero. He was never able to defeat our reigning champ and retired from the Board of Education without one single table tennis victory and little respect from the teachers association. Some school boards have taken to appointing a student member from one of the high schools. It makes sense; better to have the tail wag the dog than to have no wag at all. The board at my old school is at it again. They spent the last three years building a soccer field. They hauled in the best dirt available; only a few rocks per cubic foot. They put in a great sprinkling system and laid the best of sod. They held the kids off for a year to insure roots. It looked great. The kids played one game on the new field before the Board of Education tore it up. Why? To put air conditioning in the gym. Seems they forgot to do that when they built die place. As it is written; Education should leave a lot to be desired. SIMONS SAYS: The schools aint what they used to be and never was." SIMONS SAYS: Schools are much too important a matter to be left to the school boards. SIMONS SAYS: In general, I am opposed to school boards, but it would be dangerous to offer me the position. all-st- ar p.m. USI Coach McFall, who played an instrumental role in getting the Paiks.
