Show 4 The Magna TimesWest Valley News, Thursday, May 20, 1999 Sports 2002 Olympic Mascots: Hare (Swifter), Coyote (Higher), Bear (Stronger) The hare was sw ifter. The coyote reached higher places. The bear was strong and brave. Meet the mascots for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. The three mascots were unveiled as part of a community celebration on May 15 as Native American Billy Daydodge narrated a story from Utah legend. Petroglyphs of animal images inspired the interpretation of the mascots with their corresponding stories reflecting the Olympic motto of Citius, Altius, Fortius, meaning Swifter, Higher, modern-da- y Stronger. Snowshoe Hare (Swifter): At one time, the sun was burning up the earth. The hare ran swiftly to the top of the mountain. Shooting her arrow at the sun, she dropped it lower in the sky and cooled the land. Coyote (Higher): When the world turned dark and frozen, the p coyote climbed the highest and stole the flame from the fire people. He brought warmth back to the earth. moun-tainto- American Black Bear (Stronger): Long ago brave hunters left their villages to track the bear. But the bear was too strong and outlasted the hunters. Toda, sons of the hunters continue the chase in the night sky. "We are thrilled to present these three mascots for the 2002 Games as representatives of the land and culture of Utah and the American mighty West. said Mitt Romney, SLOC President and CEO. "Their stories arc a wonderful translation of a Native American legend into the smholism of the Olympic movement. The theme of swifter, higher, stronger crosses the boundaries of time. SLOC enlisted the assistance of five Native American and petro-gl- y ph experts to review' the authenticity of the mascot concept: Duncan Metcalfe (Utah Museum of Natural History), Dr. Laurel Casjens (Utah Museum of Natural History), Dr. Daniel Edwards (University of Utah), Margaret K. Brad (University of Utah), and Forrest S. Cuch (Utah State Div ision of Indian Affairs). "These animals appear as major characters in the myth and stories handed down to modern Native Americans, the descendants of the age groups. Ten minutes later I got to putt; yes, I missed it If anyone ever brings anoher cell phone to the golf course, I will launch it off the practice tee with driver. We were at the Delta Center watching Phoenix and the Jazz. The Jazz are down three with a couple of ticks on the clock. His wife had called to tell him to be sure and bring home some milk. If Karl had missed any of those freethrows, I would have slugged Mr. Cell Phone, and I would have been writing this column from my cell at the Point of the Mountain. I hate cell phones with a passion. They ring at the most inopportune times; right when you are reading the sports page, or going to the restroom, or both. I was driving down the road on my way to a game. I wanted to make a right turn, but the lady in front of me went halfway around the comer, then stopped to make a call. She sat there yakking as if time was of no value. Im sure it was an important call. Thats why I waited four minutes before blasting my hom and nudging her bumper. I startled her. The lady in front of me at the checkout stand had three carts chucked full of groceries. I waited patiently. Just as she started to write her check, she got a call on her cell phone. It was a member of her bridge club, and they had a lot to talk about. They went over the pros and cons of one spade, two clubs, and a grand slam. I ate two Snickers and a bag of cashews and then things got desperate. Excuse me, I said, the game starts in an hour and my ice cream is melting. Oh how I hate cell phones. The bridge player looked at me as if I were a side dish that she hadnt ordered. The checker decided to go on break.
