William Alexander, Pastor Child care available Christian Education classes for adults and children 9:45 am In 1962, a Deseret News staff writer had an idea to create a forum to celebrate academic excellence. At that time the only students who got any kind of recognition were those students who excelled on the basketball, football, or baseball teams. In 1999, the 38th annual Sterling Scholar Aw ards were given to those students who excelled in the classroom and the community. Two Hunter High School seniors were among the elite group of students given these prestigious awards. Jennifer Smith (Mathematics) and Holly Arnell (Business and Marketing) were named Sterling Scholars in their respective fields after several weeks of stiff competition. The event started with 663 talented and gifted contestants from 51 Wasatch Front public schools. Those 663 contestants were trimmed to 195 finalists competing for the coveted award in thirteen different categories. Judging was based on performance in three areas: Scholarship, Leadership, and Citizenship. After a tense night of competition, Smith and Arnell were thrilled to receive the awards they had worked so hard to obtain. "It was amazing," said Arnell. "It was a great experience and it was very exciting." Sterling Scholar Awards are not the only thing these two seniors have in common. They are great friends, they both serve on the LDS Seminary Council at Hunter, they both have performed a tremendous amount of community service, and they may both just be roommates at Brigham Young University next year. Jennifer Smith "We were just thrilled to see Jennifer win this award," said an emotional Eileen Smith, Jennifer's mother. "She has always been an exceptional person and an important part of our family. She has always worked hard and has always accomplished her goals." Jennifer won the Sterling Scholar Award in Mathematics and credits her parents for giving her the drive to excel in school and academics. "My dad would sit me down every night and work with me on math problems," said Jennifer. "It's through his help and the help of my mom, who stayed up late with me on a tot of nights working on last HOLLY ARNELL JENNIFER SMITH minute projects, that has helped me succeed." Mathematics is not Jennifer's only strong point. She ranks first in a class of 629 students and carries a 4.0 GPA. Jennifer is a member of the Hunter High School tennis team where she was a Academic player while finishing third in singles play. She is a member of Madrigals and Concert Council and Young Womens First Counselor. She has also spent numerous hours working on service projects All-Sta- te Choir, Future Homemakers of America, Seminary Council, Key Club, and Renaissance president, as well as Laurels president and assistant basketball coach in her home ward. She is seriously considering attending college at Utah State University or Brigham Young University next year where she would be roommates with Arnell. "I was really nervous and really happy to get this wonderful award." said Jennifer. Holly Arnell "This award is a real honor," said Mary Louise Arnell, Holly's mother. "Our family is very proud of her accomplishments." Holly took home the Sterling Scholar in Business and Marketing and will use that expenence to help others in life. "My leadership positions have given me great experiences. I've had many opportunities to make decisions, delegate, involve others, teach, andtouch lives.
