Show i aw muiia i vw yii to I iim wim) Big changes coming in Magna's Legislative races by KIM FOLSOM STAFF WRITER , In Senate District 12, Judy Larson, a Granite School Board member for several years, is opposing incumbent Millie Peterson in Senate District which should make for an interesting race. , Current Senator George Mantes has waffled ahout running again for1 the Senate and of this deadline has not filed. Representative Dan Tuttle in District 22 is funning for Mantes seat, instead of running for the House again. Also running for Senate District 13 is Ron Allen, a Democrat from Stansbury Park, and Republicans John Lodefink, Jack Nielsen (both of Magna), and Merrill Nelson of Grantsville. Candidates for House District 22 include: Democrat Carl Duckworth, Republicans Dan R. Cripps of Magna and Michael G. Jensen of West Valley, and Libertarian Don Johnstun of Magna. In county races, six candidates already are vying for Rjindy Horiuchi's commission seat. Cither races have also brought in competition from strong candidates and no one is running unop- posed. Since that time, she has also taken her the job of Clerk seriously, computerizing the department so that information is more accessible and accurate. Her programs to get out the vote have been unprecedented in former administrations and, because of her efforts, voting in Salt Lake County is easier and more open to the residents of the county. Some of the more interesting include tK635fSw races ; in Commissioner MaryyCallaghan's seat. She is currentiy'opposed by Karen Crompton, a community activist and strong contender. Charles Waldo and Wendy Smith, both Republicans, have also filed for the seat. If two women win the primary, it will be the first time two women have run against each other for the commission. The six people running for Horiuchi's seat include: Mike Reberg, who works for Salt Lake County and is associated with the Horiuchi Administration; David Marshall, who is the right hand man of the current Salt Lake County Commission; Stephen Harmsen, a former Salt Lake City Council member; Libertarian Cabot Nelson; and two other Republicans, Paul Walker and Margaret Peterson. Mark Shurtleff, Republican, and Paulina Flint, Democrat, have also filed for the seat. This year, the Democrats have managed to avoid division by only fielding one candidate in each office, with the exception of t Paulina Flint, who is also running against Mike Reberg. Some former office holders are trying to get their jobs back. They include former Salt Lake County Attorney David Yocom (he lost a bid for District Attorney four years ago), former Treasurer Gary Pratt, and former Surveyor Carl Larsen. Current Salt Lake County Sheriff Aaron Kennard will run again and he will be opposed by Scott Miller. I t f ;;n wtoeyeiswh': ; party. Surveyor Vaughn Butler is opposed by .Larsen, while Assessor Lee Gardner is opposed by Bob Adams. Recorder Nancy Workman opposed by Jan Johnson, the wife of Public Works director Lonnie Johnson. In the District Attorney's race, incumbent Neal Gunnarson is opposed by Democrat David Yocum and two Republicans, Mark Griffin and Robert Howell. Victor Marshall Gordon, Independent, is also a candidate for District Attorney. Auditor Craig Sorensen faces two Republicans, James Wightman and Mark Hashimoto, along with Democrat Leiann Bathemess. Sherrie Swensen faces opposition from Arlene Ellis, who has been working in the Surveyor's office. Randal Longstroth, Natural Law candidate, is also running for counv ty clerk. How far behind? Well, I am just now finished reading the issues from Nov. 27th , Dec. 4th & 11th Those were the issues that had a two part article titled, "Who Owns Your Politician?" and then a w-up attempt at rebuttal by Kim Folsom, a Magna Times staff 1 follo- writer. This series of articles caught my because the event that attention drove the initial investigative reporting was the "Trailer Court Scandal" of HB29 that attempted to grind down on the faces of the poor: namely, those tenantshome owners in the valley's trailer courts. I'm sensitive to that because 1)1 am a trailer owner, myself, and 2) not only was I affected by the legislation but I also got to work with (iOa? (itifeOcoiT a lot of people and organizations, as well as work with all of the legislators mentioned in the articles, to some degree. I distinctly remember the meeting of June 5th, 1997, in the Magna Recreation Center when more than five hundred frightened, angry people gathered to see who was going to help them in this crisis of the People vs. Utah State Font Legislature. page articles in the Magna Times and West Valley News as well as on the Front page of the local sections of the SL Tribune & Deseret News announced the meeting.
