About thirty women from Salt Lake Countys Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) program will do framing, plumbing, electrical, and painting work on the more than $1.6 million South Valley Sanctuary on about two acres at 7705 South 1850 West in West Jordan. NEW Program Manager Karen Gardner estimates about 70 percent of the programs participants are victims or have been victims of domestic violence. Its very appropriate that they can help complete this important project, Gardner said. It will give them a real sense of purpose and pride. This is a perfect project for them. The program for women includes four weeks of classroom training on issue such as: sexual harassment, child care, physical welfare, and safety. Then the women receive 12 weeks of trainThe program is funded ing. through federal, state, and local agencies as well as private sources. Penny Atkinson, South Valley Sanctuary Board Chairwoman, is thankful for the assistance. This effort is one way they can contribute to the community and help on-si- te Rezonings, plat approvals pop up in other women who have been in similar situations, she said. Work on the shelter for women and children stopped in the winter because of lack of funding. The it facility is about 65 percent complete and still needs about $200,000. If the shelter is not finished by June, Atkinson says it will lose state funding and risk the ability to open. Meanwhile, A Chocolate Affair fundraising event will be held at 6:30 p.m. on March 27 at West Valley City Hall, 3600 Constitutioh Blvd. For a $5 donation, you can sample and vote on your favorite chocolate desserts prepared by amateur and professional chefs.
