Show The Magna TimesWest Valley News, Thursday, March 6, 1997 7 Schools Carl Sandburg Elementary students jump into fitness by ALAN BLAIN STAFF WRITER Carl Sandburg Elementary students from kindergarten through the sixth grade are involved in an early morning fitness program t. known as it is an early morning jump rope and physical fitness program which started in 1984 under the direction of Carl Sandburg teachers Jean Black and Del Hutchinson. The program was started as a career ladder project by Black and Hutchinson and has exploded into an exciting fitness program and a twelve member jump team. We encouraged the children at our school to start jumping and weve seen tremendous improvesaid ments in our kids, Hutchinson. Harmons donates $33.1,000 to Utah schools Harmons Grocery Stores recently presented a check for the amount of $33,278 to PTA organizations that participated in Harmons annual PTA Days fund-raisdesigned to benefit elementary, junior high, and high schools within communities it serves. In all, a total of 80 Utah schools from Ogden to St. George will share in the money that will be used to fund a variety of educational programs, equipment, and supplier and spfirial arliuitiaiiQtithc,M scho&l children. PTA Days has been a Harmons tradition that our employees, customers, and the schools really look forward to, said Ben Harmon, vice president of merchandising for the eight-stor- e chain. Jumping is important to me because I am good at it and it has improved my coordination and my health. The team has traveled in recent years to Sea World, Disneyland, and various other places around the west competing and putting on demonstration for other schools. Mrs. Black and Mr. Hutchinson have really worked hard to teach us all there is to know about jumping, said jump team member chil- dren did in 1960. The children really work hard and most people dont even know the program exists, said Black. Our kids work at their own skill level and many of the children just starting out may not even jump a rope until they have learned some basic coordination skills.
