He has done professional theatre in New York and Ohio, and has also played The Hale Centre Theatre will present the Broadway musical She Loves 31. Me, to run Feb. A 1930s movie starring Jimmy Stewart entitled The Shop Around the Comer began a universal love affair with this enchanting story. George and Amalia are at Parfumerie who detest each other so much ... they fall in love! The occurs in a delightful dessert mixed of magical, delectable songs, a rainbow of 1930s costumes stirred by magical movement, and swirls of colorful sets, served up in a humorous love story that will warm the heart. This perfect February Valentine is directed and choreographed by Grand, Lagoon, Maras turn-abo- ut Marilyn May Montgomery. Mostly acclaimed for her excellent choreography (including HCTs The Secret Garden and Oklahoma), she also directed and choreographed HCTs blockbuster production of Forever Plaid. Jennifer Haley and Randi s Harrington-Weekeshare the lead role of Amalia. Randi was the lead in HCTs See How They Run but has held leads on numerous stages across the countrv. Jennifer is a local favorite with leads in plays and musicals too numerous to mention. Known for her marvelous voice,, she holds a BFA in music fiom BYU. n k Ilona Ritter, the of Amalia, will be portrayed by Jeni Carver and Sharon Lynn Kenison. Jenni played Nancy in and has also HCTs Oliver! played professionally at PTC, UMT, SLAC;U lin'd "Tfife 'Grand. '' Sharon stole everyones Heart as Adelaide in The Grands Guys and Dolls. She also starred in HCTs Oklahoma and The Miracle Worker. She received her dance training from the NYC Ballet. Sanford K. Porter and Bryon Finch will hold the role of Kodaly, the oily love interest of Ilona. Sanford has appeared in HCTs A Christmas Cainelot and Carol. Bryon was most recently in Forever Plaid as Sparky and was Music, Joseplf, Bye Bye Utah, who recently played Dickon in HCTs The Secret Garden. The role of the Flashy Waiter will be shared by Kyle Johnson and Tom Rich. Kyle recently Spark in HCTs Forever Plaid and The Secret Garden. Tom moved to Salt Lake from Green Bay, Wisconsin where he starred in many productions. He can also be seen in Off Broadway Theatres Quick Wits. Also in the cast are Johnny Barfuss and Lee C. Forbert as Keller; Eric B. Armstrong and Kevin Lindsay, Amber Woody and Faith Sandberg, Nancy Flamm, Alison Jensen, Debe Jacobs, and Julie Christensen. Utah Symphony Principal Trumpet Nick Norton will be featured in the world premiere of Anthony Plogs Trumpet Concerto, which was written specifically for Norton. Anchoring the concert is Rachmaninoffs dreamy Symphony No. 2, which Joseph Silverstein calls the last truly Romantic symphony. The work contains several themes that are immediately recognizable and at least one that was turned into a popular song by Barry Manilow. Also in the program is the Overture to The Italian Girl in Algeria by Rossini. Tickets range from $12-3student tickets will be available for $6 after Feb. 23. A talk by Maestro Buckley and Nick Norton begins E at 7:30 p.m. each evening. For tickets or more information, call or visit the box office at 123 West South Temple, Salt Lake City. 3; Beethovens Third Symphony, superb pianist at Abravanel Hall Feb. 21, 22 Beethovens legendary Eroica Symphony will anchor an evening featuring the return of critically acclaimed pianist Louis Lortie and the Utah debut of a work by composer David Carlson. In addition to Beethoven, this evening includes a performance by award- -. winning Canadian pianist Louis Lortie. In his third appearance with the symphony, he will play Mendelssohns Piano Concerto No. 1. The program will begin with the Utah debut of David Carlsons beautifully evocative Rhapsodies for Orchestra. Carlson gained recognition in Utah for his opera Dreamkeepers, which he composed on a commission from the Utah Opera to celebrate the states centennial. This concert will be a preview of the Utah Symphonys first-evrecording of Carlsons Rhapsodies for New World Records, which will take place that same weekend. Ring Around the Rose is the first arrangement of interactive, entertaining, and adventuresome programs hosted by RDT which will begin presenting participation packed performances on the second Saturday of the month at 11 a.m., starting Feb. 8, March 8, Brigham Young University Provo, UT 84602-640- 1996-9- 8 p.m. through Mar. 31. Additional matinees are scheduled for Saturdays at 12 and 3:30 p.m. For specific matinee dates and ticket information for all performances, 7 call Hale Centre Theatre at or stop by 2801 South Main Street, Salt Lake City. David most recently was the lead in The Hasty Heart and Brent was in Oklahoma and A Christmas Carol. Fred Derbyshire and Ron Johnson will double as Mr. Maraczek, the owner of the parfumerie. Fred recently relocated to Salt Lake from California where he performed in 24 shows at HCTs sister theater, the Glendale Centre Theatre. Ron is in his ninth role at HCT; his performances have included The Secret Garden and Dont Drink the Water. Arpad, the exuberant clerk trainee, will be played by Curtis. He won first place in the state drama tournament for outstanding performance. His stage credits include HCTs A Christmas Carol as well as The Sound of Briefs and The Nerd. His understudy is Kelly DeHaan, music director at the University of Birdie, y April 12, and May 10 at the new Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, 138 West Broadway. Young audiences will experience a wide selection of dance presentations sponsored by RDT and visiting guest artists designed to encourage an understanding and an appreciation of dance, music, theatre, and the visual arts. Ring Around the Rose starts off the series with Discover on Feb. 8 at 1 1 a.m. Audiences will explore what it is like for a dancer to prepare for the opening night from the RDT dancers' point of view. The performance is an illuminating history lesson of modem dance from the 1900s to the present, with its legends and its legacies. The journey examines artists Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman, and Isadora Duncan. On April 12 at 1 1 a.m., RDT will host the performance Friends. Leading community artists will present their creative talents in an intriguing examination of world dances. The performance studies various dance styles from ethnic, folk, tap, ballet, jazz, to modem choreography. All shows are one hour in length. Tickets are $5 per adult, $4 per child (ages and $3.50 per person (adult or child) for groups of five or more. The recommended grade level for the performances is kindergarten and older.
