Commissioned July 23, 1971, USS Fanning served two tours in Vietnam and operated in the Indian Ocean during the Iranian hostage crisis. Most recently, USS Fanning participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The ships namesake, Nathaniel Fanning, began his sea service career soon after the outbreak of the American Revolution. Beginning as a privateer, Fanning later took service as a mid received a commission in the U.S. Navy. TTie Navy is decommissioning many older ships and replacing them with fewer but more capable ships in the fleet.
