Unfortunately, it also means unsuspecting drivers and tourists may fall prey to dishonest mechanics who overcharge for auto repairs, and even make false claims that your car needs some type of repairs when it really doesnt. Be sure that your car has been given the green light to hit the highway before traveling, said GEICO president Tony Nicely. If you dont know what kind of shape your car is in before you leave, you could get swindled out of a lot of money. To help assure safe, reliable transportation and a trouble-fre- e vacation, Nicely offers the following tips: Have your car checked out by your regular mechanic before leaving on your trip. He may be able to correct minor problems that could cause major headaches if left to the diagnostic techniques of a dishonest mechanic. Make certain he checks all fan belts and power belts and replace any that are frayed all times and watch the attendant closely to make sure he or she doesnt create problems; for example, quickly slashing fan belts or pouring oil on shock absorbers to simulate a leak. Get a written estimate for any repairs that are needed. Most jurisdictions require that repairs be made within a certain percentage of the written estimate (usually about 10 percent) or the customer must be advised of the additional cost before repairs are made. If your car is not disabled, consider getting a second opinion on what the problem is and how much repairs will cost. To make certain that old parts are replaced and not simply cleaned or painted, ask that they be given to you after replacement. If possible, check with the local consumer affairs office or Better Business Bureau to learn the complaint history of a repair shop or mechanic.
