Show The Magna Times West Valley News, Thursday, July 15, 1993 5 School Briefs Private sector, public and higher education collaborate on laser disc Dr. Briant Farnsworth of Granite School District is creating an interactive tutorial on laser disc to instruct teachers in effective teaching strategies. Actors performing in this program are SLCC staff, faculty, students, fine arts majors, members of SLCCs Masque Club, and performers from the Grand Theatre. Video West filmed and edited the production. The Four Rs is the fourth in a series of programs that are being used throughout Granite School District. The laser disc will be used with computer interactive software, which will cue what is shown on the users screen. The disc is bar coded to allow a facilitator to program the order of a presentation in front of a group. Host families sought for students American host families are being sought for high school students from Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia for the 1993-9- 4 school year in a program sponsored by the American Intercultural Student Exchange (AISE). These students, age will arrive in the U.S. in August, attend a local high school, and return to their home countries in June 1994. The students are fluent in English and have their own medical insurance and spending money. These All-Sta- ld rs All-St- ar er Former Governor Norman Bangerter, a Cyprus High School alumnus, Class of 1951, is giving other Cyprus High graduates a jum start on their futures: Bahgerter endowed Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) with a scholarship fund to help Cyprus seniors reach their goals. Two Cyprus High graduates, Class of 1993, were each selected to receive Bangerter Scholarattend SLCC. to ships For Garrin D. Mascarenes $1,000 and Sheryl M. Moyes, the first recipients of this scholarship, the award is just what they needed to move ahead with their plans. Mascarenes and Moyes were selected because of their class standings and interests. Moyes was already planning on attending SLCC and said she was surprised to find she was a Bangerter Scholarship recipient.'"The money will really help'out,'4 she said. She wants to teach and is completing her general education courses at the community college. Mascarenes has a strong interest in broadcast communications and is excited about receiving the scholarship to pursue those interests at SLCC. His talents attracted the attention of his high school counselors and principal SLCC VICA students win gold at national Skill Olympics in KY Students from Salt Lake Community Colleges VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) chapter recently participated in the United States Skill Olympics, held in Louisville, KY, June The VICA Skill Olympics 21-2- 5. have been called the showcase of vocational 'education. VICA has nearly 300,000 members in 13,000 na- tional and international chapters. The. SLCC VICA chapter sent 25 students to complete in Louisville. Each qualified in school and state competitions earlier this year in categories ranging from advertising design to residential plumbing, and each of these students placed in the top 50 of their division. They represent the top one percent of all VICA students. Besides showcasing their achievements, students have the op-- . portunity to show potential they have developed. Those winning medals from SLCC are: Kellee Jensen, Cosmetology, 1st place (gold medal). Melinda Harrison, Opening and Closing, 1st place (gold medals). This elementary was selected as one of Governor Mike Leavitts Centennial Schools. The principal and assistant principal, along with the faculty, will be trying out some new ideas to student benefit help education. Parents, teachers, and students will be working together to determine just how the new ideas will work. Assistant principal Sally Sanders indicated that the cooperation of all involved will be most important for a successful program. One change that is very important is the Student Education Plan (SEP) for each student. To lay groundwork for such a plan, assessment conferences are being set up for each child and parent with teacher. the students Parents will be contacted by the teacher for their individual conference time. The conference dates are July 7 for A, B, and C tracks. August 4 are for D track. After the conferences, SEP teams will meet to formalize a plan and later check to determine if goals are being accomplished.
