February 25, 1993 LOCAL Public meeting scheduled to discuss Salt Flats Senator Mantes receives f Bureau of Land Management Salt Lake The District is preparing an environmental assessment on the effects of a proposed project to replace salt on the Bonneville Salt Flats. A study conducted in 1988 indicates the Bonneville Salt Flats are decreasing in size at the rate of about one percent per year. The public is invited to participate in the identification of the issues and impacts at public meetings to be held March 4, at the Salt Lake District Office, 2370 South 2300 West, Salt Lake City, and March 9 at Wendover High School, 110 South Fourth, Wendover. Both meetings will begin at 7 p.m. Anyone wishing to send written comments should address them to the Salt Lake District Office, 2370 South 2300 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84119. Reilly Industries, Inc. and Save the Salt, Inc. jointly funded a feasibility study of moving salt from the private lands owned by Reilly Industries to the public lands of the Bonneville Salt Flats. This study was conducted by Bingham Engineering and submitted to the Bureau of Land Management for consideration. The. laydown study proposes to move salt from abandoned harvest ponds on Reilly Industries property to the Salt Flats through a system of ditches. Water for this operation would be pumped from wells in the foothills of the Silver Island Mountains at the rate of about 6,000 gallons per minute. It would be moved to the harvest pond where it would dissolve salt in the pond and the resulting brines would be moved to the Salt Flats. The Salt Flats would be flooded with this brine at various locations generally from the north and west sides of Salduro Loop during the winter months. A continuous set of berms would be maintained from Floating Island through the Salduro Loop. Some of these berms exist, but significant construction would be required to make them continuous. Evaporation would dry the Salt Flats and concentrate the salt during the late spring and early summer. The feasibility study indicates that there would be adequate time for the salt to dry in most years. The initial cost of this pro- ject is estimated to be $800,000. There would also be a cost for operation and monitoring of the project, but an estimate of these costs is not yet available. The Bonneville Salt Flats encompass approximately 33,000 acres in the northwest corner of Tooele County. , New Zions banking center open Through Wednesday, March 3, Zions First National Bank will celebrate the grand opening of its newest banking center located inside the new Smiths Food & Drug Center, West South Jordan Parkway in South Jordan. George Mantes was honored with the prestigious Senator of the Year Award. Held on February 5 at the Red Lion Hotel in Salt Lake City, the Legislative Ball, with over 500 people in attendance, including emcee Tom Barberi and Governor Mike Leavitt, was a huge success. According to the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Scott Howell Senator Mantes sets new high standards of quality for politicians. Truly representing a statesman, Senator Mantes is a coalition builder and always excludes any political gian while doing the right things for the right reasons. Senator Howell also refers to Senator Mantes as Sfl5iijfjust;.the CHASE . Phone Name LAKEPARK d, N'iiUioM r Senator of the Year award ; necessary, all of a sudden they werent nearly as important as I had thought they were. For example, a few years ago I wanted an exercycle. I just knew if I had one in my home, I could get all the exercise I ever Tiegded arid woulffethave tojomii health spa or go out walking.' I could stay in shape right at home. We couldnt afford the machine at first, so I sulked and complained until we were finally able to make the purchase. The first day was great. I rode for at least a whole minute (or two). Everyone in the family took turns. A few days later, I got on the exercycle again and rode for maybe three minutes. Within a week or two I had forgotten that I even had the machine sitting there. It was no longer the answer to all my problems like I thought it would be. The same has proven true in case after case over the past 30 years. Things do not make us happy and they do not solve our problems. We only think we need things once we get them, we find we really didnt need it. The bike has not been an isolated example it happens to me all the time. I guess I just cant be satisfied no matter how hard I try. So, I guess there are at least two words I will never believe satisfaction guaranteed. Wage earners need W-- 2 Wage and Tax Statements Taxpayers who worked for more than one employer last year should be particularly careful that they have all of their W-- 2 forms and report the income from each Form W-Wage and Tax Statement. A copy of each W-- must be sent in with the 2, 2 tax return. Generally, employers must give a W-- 2 to their employees by January 31. If you do not receive it, contact your employer first to be sure he or she has your correct address. If that doesnt produce results, contact the IRS. Also, the IRS suggests you check to be sure you put the right information from those statements on your tax return for both the amount of income you earned and the amount of taxes withheld from your wages. Otherwise, you may find yourself overpaying or underpaying your taxes. I, - |
