Area scouts render service to community by Stacey T. Case Staff Writer With all the snow that has fallen, one might be led to believe that a good old- - fashioned Klondike Derby would be the best winter activity in which a district of scouts could engage. However, if you were on the roads at all a couple of Satur days ago, you would have noticed a major service project being performed instead. The boys and leaders of the Westview Scouting District voted to give up the Klondike Derby, a favorite winter camp, in favor of a service procommunity-wid- e With 33 snow removal. ject in troops participating Magna and parts of Kearns and West Valley, 350 individuals were out shoveling snow. The scouts recognized a need and began to fulfill it. Places of target were fire hydrants, sidewalks, schools, and anyone needing some kind of help. The scouts began the project at 8 a.m. and shoveled until approximately 1 p.m. that afternoon. Max Barker organized the project of snow-shoveli- scouts, who were enthusiastic about the project. The irony of this project was that while they were shoveling it began snow. This didnt discourage the scouts and their leaders. to In the afternoon, the shoveling brigade was rewarded with hot chocolate and cobbler. The scouts enjoyed Dutch oven delights of cherrychocolate, peach pineapplevanilla, peanut brittle, and spiceFrench vanillapineapplepeach whiteyellow and chocolate cobblers. The leaders and boys en- joyed themselves. Each participant received a patch, got cold and weat, and had a really good time. Appreciation was expressed to those who helped, scouts and civilians alike. Thank you, scouts for doing a good turn.
