Reynolds division, Reynolds Aluminum Recycling Co., accepts foil and foil products at approximately 600 staffed recycling centers nation- wide. The company operates 26 processing plants and supplies scrap aluminum to four reclamation plants, where it is melted to make more aluminum products. Many municipal recycling operations also accept aluminum foil through curbside or center systems. drop-of- f Reynolds Wrap has environmental benefits in addition to its own recyclability. Recyclable aluminum foil: A product before its time saw a piece of aluminum foil, he knew the tinfoil business was doomed. He immediately recognized aluminums infinite usefulness and extreme adaptability. In 1926, Reynolds began producing aluminum foil at his U.S. Foil Company, which became Reynolds Metals Company two years later. And in 1947, the company introduced Reynolds Wrap household aluminum foil, its first consumer product. Reynolds Wrap soon won its way into American kitchens from coast to coast and there it has remained. The company now manufactures enough of its flagship consumer product each year to circle the earth 100 times, and has sold more than 3.2 billion pounds of consumer aluminum foil since Reynolds Wrap was introduced. One of aluminum foils sigtioffcanf which attributes for the 1990s Reynolds might not have foreseen is recyclability. In the 1940s, aluminum foil was readily accepted by homemakers for its versatility in the kitchen, noted John M. Lowrie, vice president and general manager of Reynolds Consumer Products Division. It quickly found its place in the oven, the refrigerator, the freezer, and the school lunch box. It was adapted to the backyard barbecue by a generation that spent many of its leisure hours outdoors. And its convenience was embraced by scores of women who, finding jobs outside the home, found less time for the kitchen. The family of the 90s has discovered in aluminum foil yet another feature it considers significant, said Lowrie. Today, families are beginning to value aluminum foil because they can recycle it. Long aware that aluminum cans are recyclable, they are now considering the recyclability of foil. What state fair would be complete without com dogs, cotton candy, popcorn, and ... fried grasshoppers? Yes, not only can you sample fried grasshoppers but you can pet a hissing cockroach at the Bug House in the Pavilion at the Utah State Fair in Salt Lake City through September 20. But wait, theres more. Jay Karren, Utah State University Extension entomologist says there will also be live specimens of mosquito larvae, a walking stick, banded garden spiders, tomato horn worms, and a variety of common caterpillars destined to be butterflies. Karren says people shouldnt cringe at the idea of eating insects a tause, twoeach we year. Thats a safe pound or estimate based on how many insect parts and fragments the Food and Drug Administration allows in the foods we eat daily. Not to worry. Most insects, and especially grasshoppers, are high in protein and low in cholesterol. Eating grasshoppers is nothing new. Karren says there is evidence that the native Indians of what is now Utah ate grasshoppers cured in salt water from the Great Salt Lake. Grasshoppers dont take much preparation time. Basically, all you do is stir-fr- y them in peanut oil and to taste with salt, onions, season garlic, or cayenne pepper. For best results, Karren suggests starving the grasshoppers for at least 24 hours before cooking to clear their gut of waste products. The fried grasshoppers attracted quite a crowd last year, he said. So much so that we ran out of samples by the end of the week. So come early. 4--H 4-- H alreftt Reynolds to reduce emissions. Given its package and recyclability, Reynolds Wrap has long been a product before its time, said Lowrie. Reynolds buys back for recycling used household aluminum foil and foil ware products such as pie pans and trays, in addition to other TV-dinn- er aluminum scrap and aluminum cans. In most states, including Utah, our recycling centers accept aluminum foil mixed in with aluminum cans for recycling. Foil that has been used in food preparation should be as free as passible of leftover food and other objects, said Steven B. Thompson, national marketing manager with Reynolds Aluminum Recycling Company. Since its consumer aluminum recycling program began in 1968, Reynolds has paid the public $1.5 billion for used aluminum. If there is no Reynolds center in your community, you can call for the center nearest contact either your can you. Or you curbside local municipal operation or if and ask they accept other recyclers aluminum foil, said Thompson. Our research shows that about half of the curbside systems in the U.S. accept aluminum foil for recycling and we are confident that other rccyling operations will do the same as the market for foil . develops, he said. West Valley and Magna area residents can deposit their recyclables at 4610 South 4000 West, West Valley; and 2700 South 8450 West, Magna. As part of its recycling program, Reynolds provides a market to the solid waste industry for household aluminum foil and foil containers, along with aluminum cans and many other aluminum products. Karren says gathering the grasshoppers this year may be harder than the preparation. The dry summer has severely reduced their normal abundantpopulations in Utah.
