Show Home of the Worlds Largest Missile VOLUME 85 NO. 42 & Mining Center MAGNA, UTAH SEPTEMBER 3, 1992 84044 Lucky to be alive' by Gary R. Blodgett Editor A Magna woman and her two children in one car and two elderly women in a second vehicle are lucky to be alive today. The five female occupants were in two cars which collided broadside about 4:30 p.m. at 7200 West and State Road 201 (2100 South). Impact of the collision was estimated by Utah Highway Patrolman Mike Cowdell at 55 mph. But all five occupants were treated at two local hospitals and released with only minor injuires of a few cuts and bruised ribs. Carol Anne Jorgensen was traveling eastbound on 2100 South with her two children, Cassidy, 5, and Kourt-ne2. The other vehicle was driven Mildred by Baker, 73, from Stockton, Utah. Her passenger was Fern Kiler of Tooele. y, Trooper Cowdell said the Baker vehicle, northbound on 7200 West, had stopped for the intersection then pulled directly into the path of the d Jorgensen vehicle which was east-boun- on 2100 South. It was a terrific impact because the vehicles had no time for evasive action, said Trooper Cowdell. I thought for certain I would be investigating a fatality or at least serious injuries, but was pleasantly shocked to find out there were only very minor injuries. Two ambulances were used to transport the shaken, but lucky, victims to Valley View and Cottonwood hospitals. They were all secured in either seat belts or childs harness, and Im certain that saved them from more serious injury or worse, said Trooper Cowdell. Both vehicles were demolished. Ms. Baker was cited for failure to yield and causing an accident. Smaller sand twisters are frequently observed in the sand dunes and in the desert areas of the state, but these seldom cause damage. A large storm front moved into Utah early Sunday, causing disturbances, thunderstorms, and even hail at scattered points throughout the state. Gusty winds reportedly hurled a herd of cows against a pasture fence, but no serious injury to the animals was reported. Blodgett Editor West Valley City firefighters will be at Valley Fair Mall Sept. but it wont be to fight fires. The firefighters will be conducting their annual campaign to fill the boots for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The WVC Fire Department has received recognition the past five years as the No. 1 fire department in the state in collecting funds for MDA. Last year, West Valley City Fire Department raised more than $13,000 in donations. In 1990, the International Association of Fire Fighters, of which local firefighters are members, was the largest contributor of any organization in the United States and Canada. West Valley City firefighters will also be at two other locations the Smith Food and Drug Centers at 4700 South and 4000 West and 4100 South Redwood Road to fill boots for the same purpose. The firefighter volunteers ask the public to give generously to this cause. MDA was founded in 1950 by a small group of parents whose children suffered from muscular dystrophy. 3-- 5, |
