A video which teaches parents and children how to relate better to each other was produced by the National Association of Counties. Working on the Dream, as the video is called, can be obtained from any First Security Bank branch throughout the state for $5, said Salt Lake County Commissioner Mike Stewart. Its a superb businessgovemment example of cooperation , Stewart said. The Utah Association of Counties requested that First Security Bank help in the distribution of the video. ago. The study showed that the family unit is fraught with family challenges. Parents unprepared for parenthood, changing social norms and expectations, economic difficulties, and increasing peer pressure were among the factors shown to be exacerbating problems, straining many families to the breaking point, Stewart said. It was concluded at the end of the study that a way had to be found to strengthen individual families if any long lasting solutions were to be Continued on page 10 Sheriff Kennard puts gang responsibility on community George Stayton is the "Mechanic on Wheels," the name of his high performance shop. He is also the sponsor of the classic car show to be held at Copper Days in JK Brine Shrimpers parking lot. Local resident builds, races, shows racers by Necia Palmer Magna Times Editor Some people say, The only difference between men and boys are the sizes and prices of their toys. Well, that is a blanket statement and one cant go around stereotyping others, but George Stayton of Magna is definitely one man who has found a way to still play with cars and yet make a living. Stayton builds or rebuilds show and race cars and even races them. In fact, he moved to Magna 14 years ago because he wanted to get close to the Bonneville Raceway, he said. Stayton also met his wife, formerly Debbie Child, in Magna. For their last anniversary, he gave her a white 69 Corvette. Now her white Corvette compliments his black one, he said. Stayton owns fifteen cars. Seven are Corvettes and one is a dragster. Some ot his cars and several other prize winning cars will be on display during Copper Days, August 9 and 10, at JK Brine Shrimpers parking lot. He will have his 88 Blowing Alcohol Dragster, which he built, on display. The dragster has a 505 cubic inch Chevy engine that has a blower that supercharges and injects the alcohol fuel. The design of the engine enables the car to accelerate from zero to 190 miles per hour in 7.5 seconds. It won a drag race earlier this year by accelerating to 186 miles in 7:35 seconds. After about a quarter of a mile, a parachute is released which helps slow the car down, which is traveling around 200 m.p.h. at that time. Staytons drag racer is sponsored in part by HPC, Niel Parks Racing Enterprises in Salt Lake City, and Hunter Machine in West Valley, Another car Stayton will be showing is his 69 Sting Ray Corvette. It has the d original 427 cubic inch, four-spee- engine. Though it can go 150 m.p.h. on the open road, Stayton has rebuilt this car for his own personal use. Stayton will also have a red 69 Corvette and a limousine truck on display at the Copper Days Car Show. blem. by Necia Palmer Were a catalyst for it all. If it we take care of the problems, he said. Kennard attributes the rise in gang activity to a lack of activities for youth to be involved in and little parent attention. It doesnt seem like we have enough for the kids to do and parents arent paying enough attention to what their kids are doing with their free time, he said. Legal curfews are in effect for youth under the age of 18. The curfews are there, but they are not adhered to by parents and there are so many offenders that we cant prosecute them all. Though Kennard doesnt say the blame belongs on broken home life, he said that most youth the department has found involved in gang activities come from broken homes. Continued on page 8 doesnt work, Magna Times Editor Gang activity has become a matter of concern along the Wasatch Front and Magna is one of the high priority areas, said Salt Lake County Sheriff Aaron Kennard. The Kearns, West Valley, and Hunter areas are also of high priority, he said. Although the gangs in the Salt Lake area are not as highly organized as those from the Los Angeles area, they are involved in drive-b- y shootings, vandalism, thefts, and robberies. Some drug trafficking exists, but Kennard said he considers it a side light to the other gang activities. The gang problem is not a police problem, said Kennard.
