Festival to stage 3 Shakespearean classics Cedar City The Utah Shakespearean Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary season this summer with a full slate of entertainment, including three of the most lustrous of William Shakespeare: Hamlet, The Taming of the Shrew, and works Twelfth Night. Opening July in the Adams Theatre was one of Shakespeares most delightful romantic comedies, Twelfth Night. Its plot romps through twins parted by shipwreck. Sir Toby Belch and his cake and ale cohorts, 1 Malvolios misguided courtship, disguises and mistaken identities, characters of unbalanced humors and dutrageous.hamesv'and afinal sorting out of marriageable couples. ,The play always promises a happy ever after. n One of Shakespeares most and studied plays, Hamlet opened in the Adams Theatre on July 3 and play every Wednesday and Saturday evening through September 7. A murder, a hasty marriage, a ghost, and a melancholy prince lead to plays within plays, plots within counterplots, madness and feigned madness, and a final cathartic revenge. It is in Hamlet that the distraught prince speaks some of the most stirring lines of dramatic verse ever written: To be or not to be asks the ultimate question of existence in the simplest words the English language can offer. Twelfth Night director David Hammond notes: Twelfth Night may have been written to celebrate the Feast of Epiphany (the traditional twelfth day of Christmas), and scholars tell us it may have been first presented on an actual twelfth night in 1601. During the Renaissance the twelfth night of Christmas was a carnival night, celebrated in the manner of the earlier Roman Saturnalia, with feasting, and mock defianceof authority. Twelfth Night will be performed every Monday and Thursday evening at 8:30 throughout the season in the Adamsr Jhgatrg.
