It seems that anymore you hear a lot about being a volunteer. Its in the newspapers, on television and radio, and talked about through many a luncheon. Many people are given awards for their countless hours of volunteering. Its even called the Spirit of the Nineties. Every decade has its own bandwagon, and people are hopping on this one like its going to stay in style for many a year. People are giving of their own time without asking whats in it for them. Magna has many volunteers and many places for which to volunteer. We hear a lot these days about the shortage of money for public schools. Teachers need extra help. Students need one on one help and cant get it because of large class sizes. I was at a local elementary a couple of weeks ago and witnessed one volunteer helping a small child learn the alphabet using flash cards. I saw another volunteer teaching children how to tell time. She would move the hands of a clock and ask the children what time it was. This doesnt sound real thrilling or glamorous, but its simple. Simple enough that anyone can get involved. Becoming a volunteer at a school is Very easy,1 especially jif you have1 "cMdren attending . "XsTclfie teacKer 11" there is something you can do, or you could volunteer your time to the PTA assisting them with activities they may need extra hands in. We also have the CAP Center, the ' Community Action Program. Lucy Brown at the center indicated that during the major holidays a helping hand would be welcome; she calls it a g job. Prior to Christmas she needs extra help refurbishing toys, collecting items that are donated, and even a little help in delivering the items. In June, the Summer Lunch Program will be starting up again. Lucy is in need of people to pick up the lunch from the Redwood Center, located at 3100 South Redwood Road, at 1 1 :30 and have it back to the good-feelin- Multi-Purpo- CAP Center by distribution. 12 se for noon The Magna Recreation Center is also in need of some help in their child care area. Kay Cameron indicated that the 3- - to need volunteers to help them with arts and crafts, gymnasium skills, and other projects. The older children need this type of assistance as well. The rec center also has need of volunteer coaches in the following areas: machine pitch ball, indoor basketball, soccer, flag football, and tennis. Currently, Kay is in need of three more people to sit on the advisory board for the center. This position would involve a one- - to three-yeterm and would involve attending one monthly meeting and advising the center. Anyone wishing to coach or help with the other programs, or be on the board, should contact Kay at The Magna Library is also in need of people to volunteer. The tasks are simple and dont require much training. If you can type, dust books, or even straighten books your help is needed. You may also want to get involved in the Friends of the Library program, set up much like the PTA in the schools. If you only have one hour a week to volunteer, they would appreciate your help.
