Show The w.ipna Tiiv';,-Thursday- March 12, 1992 . 11 Stifoifaittmirit Luncheon held to honor Salt Lake Literacy Action volunteers Salt Lake Literacy Action Center volunteers donated over 9,100 hours to the community this year to help Utah citizens become proficient in reading, according to Eileen Smart, Literacy Action Center director, who honored the volunteers at a Volunteer Recognition Luncheon held at the Clarion Hotel on February 29. June Moss, who founded the Literacy Action Center, received the Our Town' to be presented in this town It is hard to be real with things that Melissa arent really real, Duckworth said. The storyline reminds the starring actors, Darin Hathaway and Melissa ? Dukworttvabout Magna, they said, presents moral messages galore, Hathaway said. Hathaway plays George Gibbs in the play. Duckworth portrays Emily Webb. Other cast members are Tom Dye as Mr. Gibbs, Adrienne Christiansen as Mrs. Gibbs, Dave Knox as Mr. Webb, Jenny Adams as Mrs. Webb, Matt Lundgren as Simon Stimson, Ben Taylor as Stage Manager, and Jeanette Linder as Mrs. Soames. Other cast members are Jeremy Robb, Elton Robb, Brian Holmes, Rachel Bradshaw, Rosie Yrisen, Dave Hunsaker, Mike Whipple, and Krensa White. Jeff Allen and Wendi Watson are responsible for publicity. The play is directed by Susan McMurray and Charles Brown is the technical designer. Our Town will be presented at Cyprus High in the auditorium at7:30 p.m. Tickets are $4 for adults, $3 with a Cyprus High activity card, and $2 for children age 12 and under. They are available at the door or in advance. The audience is requested to enter the auditorium from the1 backstage east door. Poetry contest accepting entries The National Library of Poetry has announced that $12,000 in prizes will be awarded this year to over 250 poets in the North American Open Poetry Contest. The deadline for the contest is March 31, 1992. The contest is open to everyone and entry is free. Any poet, whether previously published or not, can be a winner. Every poem entered also has a chance to be published in a deluxe, hardbound anthology. Along with 150 volunteer tutors who work in helping adults learn to read, many other volunteers assist in operating the center, said Smart. In addition, local businesses including the Clarion Hotel, Meiers Chicken, Cuisine Unlimited, Carmacks, The Upper Crust Bakery, Bakers De Normandie, Smiths Food King, and Davis Audio donated food In what has become a St. Patricks Day traditional celebration, the Utah Symphony will play all the music about leprechauns, four-lea- f clovers, and Ireland that it can find for the Irish Night at Symphony Hall. On Monday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m., Harold Gottfredson will conduct and Salt Lake County Commissioner Mike Stewart will join to sing the Irish songs that will get everyone in the mood for St. Patricks Day. The McTeggart Irish Dancers will also be there to dance an Irish jig or two. Join the symphony for the last installment in its Family Series in Symphony Hall. Tickets are $6, $8, $10, and $12 and a few are still available at the Utah Symphony Box Office, one-on-o- for the luncheon honoring the volunteers. The play is about life in a small town but gains a unique perspective by the way it is cast. To focus attention on the characters, very few props are used and a lot of pantomiming is done.
