MAGNA, UTAH 84044 THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1991 Historic Magna, hub of the scenic Oquirrh Loop Presidents Day is 41 holidays in one by Kim Folsom Magna Times Managing Editor We used to have two holidays to celebrate two great presidents: Washington on his birthday, February 22, and Lincoln on his birthday, February 15. Some people had problems with that because it broke up the work week twice in February. Others felt that all our presidents should be honored. Presidents Day, was set on the fourth Monday of February to replace the two former holidays. Now we honor Washington, Lincoln, Buchanan, Nixon, and 37 other presidents including George Bush. Plans are started for Pleasant Green pool, community efforts turn dreams into reality by Kim Folsom Magna Times Managing Editor S.L.Co. lobbyist Paul Rogers chats with Representatives Dan Tuttle and Brent Goodfellow, Magna Museum resolution sponsors. Magnas museum is on legislative agenda by Kim Folsom Magna Times Managing Editor Representatives Dan Tuttle and Brent a House Goodfellow are Joint Resolution in regards to Magnas Ethnic and Mining Museum. They noted that because of the vital role the museum will play in preservation of ethnic diversity and in the rich mining heritage of the state, the resolution recommends that the Utah State Division of History consider requesting an appropriation for Magnas museum in 1992. When the request for appropriation made, it is thought that it will be approximately $50,000. The museum will be the only museum devoted to ethnic heritage and the only one devoted to hard rock mining. The bill not only emphasized the importance of Kennecotts history but also that of Hercules as well, which also had its roots in early Utah mining. The potential of Magnas museum can be emphasized by the volume of visitors to Kennecotts open pit mine and to the Great Salt Lake. If the museum only attracts a fraction of the visitors who come to see these two top tourist attractions for the state, Magna should still benefit from a large influx of tourist dollars. The bill is only the first step in gaining state funding, but it is essential to beginning the process. Representatives is Tuttle and Goodfellow are currently trying to hold two other appropriation in the budget that impact the Magna area, since further cuts are expected on the proposed budget. These include an appropriation for SLCC Magnas computers and a permanent visitors center at the Great Salt Lake Marina. The committee includes: Tom Triptow from Salt Lake County architects; Mike Peterson and Bob Scott from Salt Lake County Recreation; Dick Guthrie, Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center director; John Gust, Salt LakejCity Parks Director; Max Hogan, West Jordan City Council; Anna Beth Mecham, Magna pool task force; Linda Wilcox, Commission office; and Harvey Germain, Salt Lake County Contracts and Procurements. Others may be added to the list when and if there is a need. The committee will choose architects for both the Magna pool at Pleasant Green Park and the West Jordan pool by March 18, according to Salt Lake County Planner Bob Scott. Two architects could be chosen, or possibly ' one firm could design both pools. The design phase will take about 120 days after that date to be completed. Construction documents should be finished by The starting date for the actual construction of the Magna pool is unknown at this time. Mr. Scott estimated the best scenerio for the pools completion would be in 1992, but it could take up to a year longer if funding or construction problems arise. Mr. Scott noted that room for an indoor pool, racquetball courts, an exer mid-Jul- y. cise room, and a sauna, as well as a conference room and babysitting facilities, are all included in the counplan. These facilities would not probably be even detailed in plans until after the pools completion in 1992. With Granite District opting to remodel the Cyprus pool as well, swimmers and other interested residents can consider this effort a real accomplishment. tys master Commission wants to take a second look at justice post In a Salt Lake County Commission staff meeting, all three commissioners expressed reservations on present process for choosing a justice for Magna and surrounding areas. The commissioners recommended reconsidering all candidates who were already interviewed and encouraged others who were interested in the justice position to apply or reapply if necessary. Those who were not interviewed may be reconsidered if they resubmit their applications. The commission felt more local input was needed in the process as well as more time to accept qualified applicants. They also felt that there was no immediate pressure to fill the position because the present justice is willing to continue until the process is completed. A public notice will be sent to all in the target area. Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply for the position. newspapers The Magna outdoor pool at Pleasant Green Park will eventually provide Magna with a full recreation center; tentative 1992 completion. |
