Boyce stopped under a street lamp in attempts to gain a bearing of his location. Out of the fog a boy approached him and asked if he could be of help. The boy took Boyce to his destination. Refusing a tip, the boy told Boyce, No, thank you, sir. I am a Scout. I cant take anything for helping. Boyce inquired what a scout was and when he finished his errand he had the boy take him to the British Scout Office. Boyce met Baden Powell, the founder of the scouting movement. Impressed with what he had learned, Boyce and a group of outstanding men in Washington, D.C. on February 8, 1910 founded the Boy Scouts of America. On display at the Magna Library are various memorabilia of scouting. The Linschoten family in the normal course of time has acquired many fond memories and close scouting friends who, in true scouting fashion, share some of their treasured memorabilia. LaMar Mecham shares his Eagle statue plaque and Norman Rockwell scout stamps. Dallin Purser shares his green scout leader hat and red beret. Dallins son, Brian, shares his patch vest that displays favorite scouting memories. Cub Scout An- drew Collier shares his unique Pinewood Derby that looks like a skateboard. Ted Cases artistic talents are shared on many scout items. The Cub Scout program evolved as younger boys tried to tag along with their older scout brothers. Baden Powell based Cub Scouting on one of the stories in Rudyard Kiplings Jungle Book entitled Mowglis Brothers. The scouting program instills basic values through fun activities that develop character, a love of nation, nature, and a willingness to give service to their community.
