Seems as how my grandfather Goble used to keep an old shoebox up in the closet of the old adobe home on Center Street in Nephi, and every time hed come in from the herd he would add another mining claim to the papers he had stashed in that special box. The problem was. Grandmother (Mary Ellen Bale Goble) didnt share his enthusiasm for the papers in that box. As a matter of fact, according to my father, she used to treat Granddads treasure ''jfove of" papfefS' with SAVE On Now Wagons 4x4s & Front Drives SPECIAL PURCHASE SO LEGACY LS 4X4 WAGON Losded, ABS Brakes, Auto 53711 something approaching disdain. Dad recalls, As soon as my father headed back out to the herd. Mother would do a bit of tidying up. Tidying up meant that whatever papers Grandmother could lay her hands on were tossed out pronto. Ive often wondered why Grandma took such a hard stance against Grandpas obvious fascination with prospec- ting. I suppose its because shed seen enough of mining. You see, her family was from, appropriately enough, the little village of Coalville in England. And, naturally, they were a family of coal miners. And when the family emigrated to America in 1871 ... you guessed it.... they First settled; in Coalville. Utah territory. pA So, when silver ore was discoverSf out in Tintic at the base of Tintic Mountain about 1870. some of Grandmothers brothers sought employment as miners in the new bonanza town of Silver City. Silver City became a boom town almost overnight with a population of with two hotels, a nearly 1,500 church, several stores, a post office, many saloons, and a large dance pavilion ... The Bale boys must have worked for the Tintic Milling Company or in one of the many mines that were mining ore, selling stock ... and talking big ... And there was a stage coach that used to run from the town of Goshen through Silver Pass and down Ruby Hollow ... to Silver City carrying the local Mormon boys to and from the mines. Then, in 1883, the Utah Western railroad (Salt Lake and Western) ... extended its trackage up to Silver ... enabling the mines in Silver City to increase their output and also transport the ore out for smelting. Some of Silver Citys mines included: The Alaska, Rabbits Foot. Swansea, Sunbeam, Treasure Hill. Tesora. and the Black Dragon. After 1896. Jesse Knight's mines appeared. Iron Blossom, Star, Dragon, Black Jack, Uncle Sam ... and the incomparable Humbug. But thats another story. Anyways. I suppose Grandmother was probably right about Grandpa's prospecting because most of the claims washed .out ' Water .. ar ou nXTmtTc f wavencowuered in nearly. all of them and the ore grade also declined with the depth of the excavation, causing most of the digs to be abandoned as economically unfeasible. But Id still like to know what happened to that old shoebox stuffed full of Grandfather Goble's mining claims. One of these days I plan to find out. Not that I expect to unearth any buried treasure ... far from it. Its just that Id like to know how close Grandpa really came to striking that fabled "Mother Lode. One thing is for certain. He never quit looking in spite of Grandmas objections. Maybe he just liked to keep her fussin. After all, from what I've been told, he had quite a reputation as a tease.
