Show 2 The Magna Times, Thursday, April 5, 1990 Editor Dear Editor, On March 8, the Green Sheet and Magna Times printed our letter commenting on the excessive speeding on 8600 West. Cyprus High School has been announcing almost daily for all drivers to slow down. On March 19 and 20, Sheriff Pete Hayward assigned two officers to spend 90 minutes daily in the area. 36 speeding tickets were issued. These tickets went to Cyprus High students as well as the general public and those who should set an ex- ample for our children, the TEACHERS and STAFF. The average speeder was doing 37 MPH in a posted 25 MPH zone. In a recent issue of the WV Focus, Sergeant Whitney of the UPH stated, Speed follows close on the heels of drunken driving as the second highest cause of deaths. When speed isnt killing, its maiming. Injuries go up drastically with only the smallest increments of higher speed. In the March 20 edition of the Tribunes Public Form, Robb Strong of Lehi suggested that Utahs nickname should be changed from The Beehive State to the Stupid Driver State. We agree! When the same adult receives two warnings and a speeding ticket within three weeks on the same street, when another is issued speeding tickets two days straight on the same street, we have a definite problem. What is wrong with us when getting home early is more important than the life of a small child or family pet? What can be done with these stupid drivers? Lets start with slowing them down! Let this be a warning to those Of yOU are recordg 4m WW& Hayward your license numbers. The residents of 8600 West Dear Editor, Having read former Governor Calvin L. Ramptons timely book entitled, As I Recall, and having served in the Utah State Legislature during Governor Ramptons term, I wish to express the following observations: Governor Ramptons modesty was readily evident when Governor Elect. I commented to him, I must now call you Governor instead of Cal. He replied, You can still call me Cal. Governor Ramptons eventual rise to political fame (with more elections lost than won) is evidence that success is not in never failing, but in rising each time you fail. Lucy beth, wife, distinguished First Lady, and advocate for disadvantaged citizens, was an influential contributor to Cals successful public service life. His greatest political asset was his keen insight into governmental affairs, his articulate manner of expression, balanced political positions, and unique ability to effectively work with legislators on both sides of the aisle. Governor Ramptons wise selection of state administrators achieved unparalleled success in state business and economics, tourism development, and educational attainments. Having the advantage of retrospection, as a former state legislator I would have been a more ardent supporter of Calvin L. Ramptons distinguished and extensive governorship service. His forthright book provides an interesting and informative insight into the governmental process in general and the governorship in particular. Respectfully, John E. Jack Smith Former state legislator Give a gift theyll use all year long ... a subscription to the Magna Times Mitorial Dear Editor, , Most of us would like to do more to ease the human pain and dollar costs " of drug abuse, homelessness, lack of quality child care, overburdened schools, illiteracy, low productivity in the workplace, families under stress, and neglected children. With your help, we can. One institution stands out as the key resource for serving these needs, and many others as well. It is the nations leading provider of human services in most communities. It is the nations most cost effective human service institution. It relieves much of the tax burden. They volunteer their time for community service at three times the national average. They reject illicit drug use at twice the national average. They demonstrate productivity in the workplace, literacy, and commitment to children and family life at levels well above the national average. They contribute well over twice as much money to human services than do all corporations and foundations. Your community needs more of them. So does the nation. Magna received some press in that publications March 29 April Fools issue. Unfortunately, like most outside press, the article in that publication was negative and laughed at us, not with us. You might forgive an April Fools joke article if it did not look so much like other articles that have appeared in the same publication on Magna throughout the years. The joke article had as its target Magna water. Magna water may have a unique taste but it is by no means the worst water I have ever tasted. If you have ever traveled to Los Angles or Phoenix you too can testify that there is water much worse elsewhere. In fact, the water in Murray isnt going to win any prizes either. I might be wrong, but I cant ever remember seeing one positive article about Magna water in that publication. a shame that it is never pointed out that Magna has some of the best water and sewage facilities in the state. Magna Water District has a modem sewage system that was planned with plenty of capacity for industrial and residential growth. Magna actually has the best of two worlds because it mixes its water with Deer Creek water to improve the taste but in a water shortage can rely on its wells for water, so no one in Magna has to reduce their usage. Magna water might be a joke to some but it is a real asset to Magna. It would be good to get the whole story sometime instead of just the punch line. Hansens bill is firmly based in the recognition that the federal government exercises near absolute dominion over federally owned lands and that states with greater than 25 percent federal ownership already labor disproportionately to states with lesser federal ownership in confirming to dictates and prescriptions handed down from ' Washington. Congressionally KIM FOLSOM Magna Times Assistant Editor It is a call to arms, or at least to arm your brain with a little knowledge. The time for candidates to enter their names into this year s political races is at hand and will only last until the April 16 deadline for registration. A number of candidates have registered to run in the Senate race this year but so far only one has declared in the House race. Mass meetings will be coming up and they are one of the important participatory functions of politics that are almost always ignored. Delegates are decided at these meetings and other party officials are elected. These meetings have a lot to do with the final choices in November. Although the Republicans seem to do better on raising money on the state level than do Democrats, your favorite local candidates and grass roots organizations can use your support both with your money and time. There are always many complainers after an election but usually these people on the made little or no attempt to become involved where it all starts races of number a have including the county neighborhood level. So, this election is critical to both parties. Contact . . . , . Nothing bothers me more than watching a new small business quit operating, knowing that the owner has lost his investment in time, money, and hope. He may even owe quite a bit and have to declare bankruptcy. Those who gather statistics tell me that about 70 of small businesses, started with so much enthusiasm, have quit operating by the time they reach age 5. Most of the time the people who started the new small business have lost their investment and spend five to ten years paying back what they borrowed and guaranteed. Just recently, I talked with a group of those who quit. Over half told me that they had quit, not failed, because they discovered the businesses they had started did not produce the profits and benefits they expected, and took more time than they planned on working. In a class on entrepreneurship, starting and operating your own business, we had a studehfofHtfffi'tdFbifen a restaurant featuring the Cantonese food. She knew how to prepare such food and had worked in a regular menq cafe for many years. Her Chinese food always rated rave reviews. The questions the lady wanted to answer, before she started up, did she have any chance for success in our community, could she get financing, and what kind of profit could she produce. We surveyed our people and discovered that they didnt care for any Chinese food on a regular basis. Most werent willing to give it a try. A limited number might try something different every month or two, even if it was good. with this kind of response, the idea of an ethnic food restaurant didnt seem to make much sense. Just for the heck of it, we checked out other ethnic food possibilities, and found that any variation from meat and potatoes would have an acceptance problem in the surveyed area. We also discovered that our before tax and owner salary profit would be between five and ten percent of sales, if the restaurant was popular. The restaurant, to make money, needed to be well visited during the week plus Saturday night. There is a lesson to be learned. Before starting a business, you need to develop a business plan and forecast, which shows you the range of investment and income that is possible. If your idea still makes good sense to you and those who are helping you, and you have the experience to proceed, your banker should be consulted about financing, hanker is willing to help and the plan profitability is there, and you understood your commitment in time and can get the people you need, it is time for you to try to convert your plan into reality. Thats Straight Talk! THERE NEVER WAS A BUS SO CROWDED THAT SHE COULDN'T GET A SEAT. r designated wilderness is the ultimate manifestation of federal dominion wherein the federal authority in fact reigns supreme over all other interests in perpetuity. Congressman Hansen is saying that already burdened western public land states should have some form of recourse before they are subjugated by this imperialistic final federal solution western public land management.' Kenley Brunsdale, Democratic candidate running opposed to Congressman Hansen, was quoted in the Tribune on March 19 as saying that Hansens bill was pure grandstanding. Brunsdale reportedly said this was another case of (Hansens) telling a small special interest group what they want to hear. Is that so? What interest group might Hansen be speaking to? . , It is proven fact that congressional wilderness reduces the value of school trust lands. Hansen is speaking to parents and teachers. Wilderness closes roads. Hansen is speaking to those who use public lands in a vehicle or on a bicycle. Wilderness stops exploration and development of our mineral and energy resources. Hansen is talking to anyone who uses metals, fuels, or elec-t- o tricity in their lives. Wilderness locks up our resources which, if produced, would generate jobs, tax revenues, royalty payments, and more. Hansen is to the low income, the unemployed, and the taxpayer, wherever he may be in Utah. Wilderness prevents development of precious water resources. Hansen is talking to those who use water in their daily lives and those who would like for their children to be able to use water. Wilderness prevents effective talking wildlife management including habitat management. Hansenis talking to the sportsman and the wildlife user alike. Congressional wilderness will impose a strict, unyielding federal agenda on Utahs public lands and water and, thereby, on Utahs people. Hansen is talking to all Utahns who would prefer to live relatively free of federal imperialism and who would like to pass a measure of that-- freedom on to future ve generations. These are just some of the small that Conspecial interest groups is Hansen gressman talking to. The question now becomes this: What small special interest group is candidate Brunsdale talking to?
