Old battle tested foes with a rap sheet of grievances betwixt themselves that stretches back into the murky depths of yesteryear, the Pirates and Miners have been as inseperable from one another as darkness is from light. Nobody seems to know precisely when this rivalry evolved from a affair to a full blooded battle for bragging rights and supremacy along the Oquirrhs but a donnybrook it truly came to be. ho-hu- m By the time dangerous Dale Simons and his swashbuckling lads had emerged upon the scene in the fateful forties just in the nick of time to knock heads with Mauling Miner Dick Jenkins and his Brigade of Bad Guys, Magna and Bingham resembled an armed camp during the football and basketball season. You name it, if it was competition, rest assured that Bingham and Cyprus had already been the first to try it. The Mashing Miners and Punishing Pirates never backed down from a chance to exchange a blow or two in the name of their respective alma maters. If you watched the Irish on television the other night, you would be quickly convinced that all the slow runners had gone to another university because those - who trotted onto the field for Holtz were rapid runners. They tell them to do it their way or hit the road. Back in the days when long hair on athletes was an issue, many an erstwhile player chose hair over his teammates. One such story follows: The kid was big and fast and could hit the hoop with his jump shot. The coach wore a crewcut. The kid looked good in the early practices. The coach liked what he saw. Cuts were made and the kid looked like a starter. The coach laid down his rules, which were; no smoking, no drinking, and short hair. The kid liked his hair and the coach liked his rules. He told the young, tall one with the great jump shot to get a haircut. The kid rebelled and refused. The coach told him to buy a guitar and take a walk. The kid thought his rights were being trampled. The coach said, Your hair is in your eyes. You cant see to shoot. Its my way or highway. Who knows how good the kid might have been. His hair flowed well. He got better and better on the guitar. He still had his hair, but his jump shot went into atrophy. The coach kept his honor. Won won? Who knows ... probably no one. They both did it their way. And, again, there was this basketball player whose dad pushed him hard both summer and winter and over the dinner table. Seems the young player also had a big brother who had this magnificent obsession to be a coach himself and he gave his little brother lots of input and many suggestions. Between the dad and the brother, most of the young prospects time was taken up following their coaching tips. When the kids real coach got wind of it, he It only got worse after that. We all know he should have been listening to his real coach, although he was not a blood relative. The coach sent the kid packing. He had a good year in the church league. Someone else took his place on the school team. I havent seen his dad or brother at any coaching clinics or professional meetings. Hole in the Rock Jamboree to be held PERFORMANCE! The second annual Hole in the Rock Trail Jeep Jamboree out of Blanding, Utah is planned for October 6, 7, and 8. The trail is over 100 years old and there are still signs of those long ago wagons scratched into the sandstone which is known locally as slick rock. The end of the trail overlooks Lake Powell. The original Hole in the Rock pioneers overcame severe hardships to complete this impossible journey. They had to cut through a sheer rock face to build a narrow trail through which the wagons were lowered several hundred feet. Save! Road gripping performance radial.
