Hercules now has strict procedures for disposing of industrial waste but, because of looser policies in the past, the aerospace giant has had to clean up a number of old dump sites at considerable expense. Hercules makes periodic checks of ground water pollution levels in wells on their property. During one of these checks recently, higher than normal levels of TCE (trichloroethene), DCE (dichloroethene) and a lower than normal level of TCA (trichloroethane) were discovered. The TCE measured 20 parts per million as compared to the safe standard of 5 part per million the Start your day right with fresh eggs from Fassio! Hercules has cleaned up 76 waste sites on their property but the cause of this problem is still unknown. Hercules is currently in search of the waste site and is working with the Utah Department of Health in all phases of the clean-u- p operation according to John Gale, director of production planning and control at Hercules. Hercules is paying for past practices but is also making careful plans to avoid future problems. DCE measured 22 parts per million compared to the safe standard of 7 parts per million, TCA Was measured at 160 parts per million in comparison with the the safe standard at 200 parts per million. Although the concentrations are not life threatening, Hercules has or is in the process of obtaining permission to test residential and irrigating wells north of their test well because the pollution is estimated to travel approximately 200 to 400 feet per year.
