Models armies almost succeeded, overrunning the American First Army enroute to the Meuse River along the southern Ardennes forest. But with a single word, an American commander and a handful of never-say-di- paratroopers e thwarted Hitlers masive counter attack. When asked to surrender his men . and the village of Bustogne, Brigadeer General Anthony C. McAuliffe replied, Nuts! And his handful of gutty men of the 101st Airborne Division backed him up until the American Third Army fought through to relieve the surounded and Pirates fought a battle of their own with consequences less traumatic but the probability of success no less far The BY. W. KENT GOBLE On December 16, 1944, beleagured Americans in January, 1945. The famous battle of the bulge became history but the courage and determination of a few good men and their fearless commander turned overwhelming adversity and almost certain defeat into a memorable victory. 1987-8- 8 Cyprus fetched by the best assertations of the most astute prep basketball war watchers. As a matter of fact, the Pirates were picked to finish last in a region where height and talent and depth seemed to be concentrated everywhere but at Cyprus. And, perhaps to some deviners, the last place pick was being generous. Likely one or two would have forecasted' . a category if it had been available. Sort of the 65th seed in the NCAA tourney. But the gutty Pirates stunned them all, with the same kind of attitude displayed by nuts another combatant or another battle field of life but with no less a reason to fight for what they believed in. THEMSELVES! And what a war they waged. Ice cold at the hoop, they fell to powerful Cottonwood 0 on January 5 making the pickers look like geniouses. But then came the Olympus game at home January 8 and the first upset. The gritty Pirates blasted their way to a 0 first quarter lead and hung on to level the Titans st 81-6- 14-- 69-5- 3. Then a . big win at Granger that was in the category of upset and the Kearns home game, a hard fought 7 victory that proved to the kids that they could punch with the best. Another upset, over at home was Skyline sandwiched between two road losses at Olympus and Taylorsville but there was no retreat. Just a quick reload. An then the final push, for victories in five games with the contested game at Skyline their only loss. February 2nd, Granger falls 8 at home. February 5th, Pirates topple Kearns at Kearns February 10th, Pirates battle Taylorsville into two overtimes and ust the bomb to win another thriller And, finally, February 16th at Cyprus. Proud Cottonwood, standing undefeated in ten games, and Number 1, is blasted from the top by a barrage of Pirate baskets Coach Mark Wilson and his kids, against heavy odds, had fought their way to a strong Region Four second place finish and a well deserved 4 record. They had said Nuts to those who expected them to finish last and won the battle, the respect of their peers and a place in the hearts of every underdog who saw 57-4- 63-5- 3, 67-4- . 64-6- 67-6- , 86-6- 8-- Magna youth receives his Eagle Scout rank; helped pack Mid I I I I I I I I I I I I I ID ID & Confetti Monteray or Jack FRYER LEGS 35 LB Tortino LB Picksweet frozen Tempting Topping are Gary Ransom and Loren Thompson CP WHOLE 1.19 Christopher M. His scoutmaster was Ron Weight and his varsity coaches )' 250-634- 3 PORK CHOPS it gamesmanship. Some call it cheating. The baseball pitcher scuffs the ball, the batter puts cork in his bat. The basketball coach walks up and down in the coaching box, or glances at the officials. Even the loud crowd screams displeasure at those in striped shirts, in an attempt to intimidate. The football team may have a pick play, which is used to screen the defensive back and open up the receiver. (A play often used and seldom noticed by the officials ) . The crowd behind the basket may scream, wave towels or even blow a bugle as the embattled basketball player tries to sink an important free throw. They may throw stuff on the floor. (A technical may be called, but usually isnt). How does gamesmanship work? Consider the following: A basketball player may say to his opponent, Dont drive or Ill dump you on your head. The football line backer mav sav to the other teams running back, If you come my way again, Ill hit you so hard your kids will limp. Thats one type of gamesmanship. There are many others such as getting in the base runnerss way as he rounds second, so he can be thrown out at third. It is considered gamesmanship for the pitcher to throw a hig hard one under the hitters chin before he pops the curve ball on the outside corner. The trouble with gamesmanship si that it usually graduates .to cheating, and little cheating will become big cheating. i In golf, if you square toe your ball to get a better lie, or drop one out of your pocket when your ball is lost in the rough, you may improve your score, but not your game. SIMONS SAYS: For some golfers the best wood in the bag is the pencil. SIMONS SAYS: Some college presidents get upset with the coach if he loses, but not if he cheats. the character of these Pirate kids come to life with their on court play. Please take a look at these kids, as pictured here. For some like Brent Lamb, Mark Richards and Lyman Smith, other battles of like await. But they have learned well that, more than the odds, its heart and hustle and a will to win that will help you find the way. And, the others? Youll see many of their faces come November filled and with determination Commitment and belief, in themselves. And youll see the same kind of underdog determination and play and more upsets. Coach Wilson, coach Gwen and Coach Applegate, their kids, and a lot of Pirate Pride will be back to drive their opposition nuts. 7200 West 3500 South, Magna, Utah ASSORTED ROYAL CROWN CHERRIERC & DIET RIGHT VEGTABLES Peas, com, mixed peas ft Carrots IVknra WhsfG Quality Still Counts 2 2 LARGE PIZZA'S (2 Hens) LITER'S SOSA $WoW I Must Hove Coqpon-dcSve- $2.00 fy 0 2750 So. 8400 WJ25D-209- 0 exp.4 D D D D D D D D D D D D 0 D D D 3j a a a Salt Lake City - The Utah AIDS Consortium is holding its monthly meeting from 3 to 5 on Tuesday, March 8 at the State Capital, Room 305. You have to know how to live on the edge a little . especially in the athletic world. Other fellas are going to push you round, step on you toes, use the hips and elbows in the clinches, and in nameless ways - take advantage. I remember the first time I played basketball in the Provo area, a guy named Brown guarded me quit: successfully by holding on to may pants. I was scoreless until I learned how to smack his arm away. Then he began to pull the hair on my legs and before I could counter that play, the game ended. Everyone associated with sports knows there is some gamesmanship goes on, like gouging in the gootball pileups and putting a body on the rebounder. It isnt taught its learned.
