Show THE MAGNA TIMES, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26, IMS 'rcndipity Thagsma with no ruSss ports By Kent Goble Magna Times Sports Writer ' Coach Joel Gardner and the third ranked Mountain View Bruins became true believers Saturday Rv Dale Simons Most officials have ears, and 4 - F eyes. They hear everything that is said to them, but only see half the things that happen. Book of Hag no rules? People do it every day, all the way from the church league to the pros, with many mysteries in betHow can you play a game that has ween. Basketball is the game. There are no rules; only similies and vague in- terpretations. Feb. 20, 1988 as they discovered what it is like to play a championship caliber basketball tam as the unheralded Cyprus Pirates used their poise to stun the lofty Bruins in the opening round of the Region state tournament at the University of Utah. The remarkable Pirates used another of their magic moments to beat the Bruins on the court, winning y the convincingly while losing the score in overtime Having conquered the Mountain for nearly 32 minutes, leading throughout by as much as a dozen points, the Pirates were denied a much deserved victory in the final moments of regulation play and then overtime by a combination of circumstances which occasionally deny the most deserving team a complete victory. No one who witnessed, the play of the scrappy Pirates will disagree that against long odds, those persistent Pirates kids won the battle, scoreboard not withstanding. As Tom Wharton of the Tribune stated, what gives with the Cyprus Pirates? Saturday Mountain View found the answer. Everything! When you play the Cyprus Pirates, they give their all and then some and that is the true mark of a championship team. Certainly the Bruins and Coach Gardner will readily admit that the Cyprus Pirates are a worthy opponent of any of the 16 teams in the tournament including being more than a match for the Bruins second round Opponent, Clearfield. The Pirate demise was a Bruin press late in the game which generated several turnovers to the Bruins. The willingness of the officials to allow significant contact enabled Mountain View to seperate the Pirates from the ball with a few no calls interspersed with legitimate steals. The Pirates also missed four of five foul shots in the closing moments to enable the fortunate Bruins to pull off a backdoor victory. 4-- play-by-pla- 53-4- Officials have so much control, and so little judgement, that the game often disintergrates into a menagerie of miscalls or a travesty of technicals. It will do you no good, dear reader, to memorize the rule book, since the theory of the printed page hardly ever becones reality once the game gets on the floor. If you are one of those who think basketball has hard fast rules, we need to talk so I can convince you of the reality of the situation. Take the Utah-BYgame recently played down at Provo. It all started when. Chapman drove down the lane to the basket for the Y. The rules say there must be contact before a foul can be called. It went like this: The star of one team became frustrated because the other team played defense on his with a hand in his back. He responded by swinging at his guard, and hitting him on the jaw. I The officials did not kick him out, or call a flagrant foul, as the rule book dictates. Later, this same street fighter was tripped, the officals called traveling. He got up and threw the ball hard, not to the official, but to a teammate. The official kicked him out. What rule was broken? If you really want to see the rules ignored, go watch a pro game. The rules there really undergo a complete metamorphosis. The traveling rule, for example is manipulated. The traveling rule reads the same in the book for all levels of basketball, yet you cannot recognize it. If a high school player twitches his backside. its traveling. It' is estimated that nearly 80 percent of our population will suffer from low back pain at some time during their life. Low back pain secondary to an injury is a leading cause of disability in our country today. It is also the most frequent cause of lost work time in adults under 50 years old with an estimated economic loss of 15 billion dollars annually. (As reported by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons ) What Causes Low Back Pain? Low back pain has many causes. The symptoms may occur immediately after an injury or may be delayed for 4 hours. As a general rule younger athletes experience sudden pain after acute injuries where older individuals have a prolonged onset most commonly due to a degenerative process. Several basic common sense rules may help you avoid low back pain. Avoid overuse of the lower back muscles. Injuries are likely to occur when the spinal muscles are fatigued. Avoid lifting objects with the lower spine bent or flexed. Instead lift with the back straight and the legs flexed at the knees. Avoid obesity and keep physically fit. Injuries in athletes represents a significant number of patients with low back pain. Football, wrestling, and gymnastics account for most of the sports related low back injuries. The mechanisms include forceful bending (flexion or extension) of the spine as seen in football or wrestling.
