Show Community Magna Area Council Voting District Dear C&r Hi lOHNi by John Waterbury Proented u a Community Service from Intermountain Health Caro. Dear John, If drug use among our kids is really as bad as you say, why isnt something being done on a national level to get rid of the problem? Im not aware of anything special that is being done to get to the source of the problem. And anyway, I have always thought that all kids go through a phase where they experiment with drinking. Thats nothing new. But thats just my opinion. District No7 Connls G. Kendall District No. 6 1771 Bruce Whetstone Debra L Jacobi Frank Arreola J. Russell Hansen Kathrln Brlmlev Dear NN, Nothing New I appreciate the time you took to write to express your opinion, but you need to be aware that your opinion is not based on the facts. The drug problem here in Utah is not just a phase that kids go through. Thirteen thousand adolescents are using alcohol or drugs on a daily basis. Theyre starting their use at about 12 years of age and theyre dying as a result. Drunk driving is now the number one cause of teenage fatalities in the nation. And contrary to what you state in your letter, there are local, state and national campaigns in progress to address this problem and find a solution. An entire generation is at risk. Even the Boy Scouts have made a major effort to confront this issue. Tieing in to the national effort by President and Nancy Reagan, this organization has developed a booklet that very accurately identifies the drug problem. It contains messages from nationally known sports figures, actors, and experts that destroy the myths that are so commonly accepted. The booklet even has a chart that clearly shows the damage that occurs to the body when alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, cocaine, and amphetamines are used. Its one of the best that Ive seen. This booklet is called Drugs: A Deadly Game and is being distributed throughout the Boy Scout organization. Its time we all get involved. There are several groups in our area that are willing to speak to schools, community groups and churches on the subject of drug and alcohol use. If you dont know who to turn to for this kind of information, contact your local mental health center, or contact me. We cant afford to ignore the problem any longer. There was such a positive response to the intervention brochure Chemical Dependency A Family Action Plan that it is being provided again. The brochure addressed techniques that are useful in managing a chemical dependency problem in 9 for a free copy. LDS homes. However, the sting of those challenges will be somewhat softened if the Magna industry can land the Titan III and IV contracts. Were trying to bring more work here, said Bacchus Works director of public affairs, Jack DeMann. Were Snaking a major effort on the Titan III and IV. The significance of these contracts cannot be underestimated, noted. Jobs, an economical p and other unforeseen will result from the conadvantages tracts to the selected aerospace developer. Because of three contracts Bacchus Works has which will not be renewed at years end, 300-40- 0 employees are in the process of being laid off. The the Pershing II and the Polaris A-Wound Case for the all contracts Hercules are shuttle space is losing. The loss of these projects makes die Titan III and IV contracts that much more important. As Bacchus Works has already submitted their proposal, the government-low bid is expected to approved be made known any day now. Competition is tough for it, DeMann noted. The Magna facilitys corporate brothers in Texas and Maryland, besides four other competitors, are vying for the lucrative contracts. Bacchus Works has demonstrated in the past its ability to handle development contracts, such as the Delta II and the small ICBM, or the Midget Man misslc. Weve had success with these, said the public affairs director. Now the production (Tital III and IV) is next. Hercules Magna location took 1 Vi years in the Delta II and small ICBM developmental stages, DeMann noted. Speaking of U.S. Defense Department contracts, the Hercules official said, Its a cyclical thing with defense contracts. They tend to come in spurts. Another problem is that we get to a point where we get complacent in our democratic government, when we dont have our minds on the conflict with communism and we get behind in defense. DeMann stressed the need of a strong U.S. defense, while at the same time promoting peace at any cost De-Ma- pick-me-u- FWC-Filame- nt As far as encorachment is concerned, it has had somewhat of an impact on Bacchus Works. The Magna facility lost the Short Range Attack Missle (SRAM) to Hercules Cumberland, Md., site, due to their facilities, which we couldnt match; encroachment was also a factor here, noted DeMann.
