Brian Shaw placed second in the event, in which the two top finishers were eight-grader- Sixty-thre- e seventh-an- s. d competed for the tide. Melanie had to spell medallionist and mentor to claim first place. Unfortunately for Melanie, she didnt participate in the Granite School Districts finals on March 12. Apparently, she never received the letter of notification. She didnt ever get the letter, said Brockbank principal Mike Bennett. Im not sure why it didnt get to her. In other news, the school is sponsoring a music concert today (March 19) at 7 p.m. It will feature the band, chorus, orchestra and pop ensemble. The girls gymnastics team just finished their season with district competition. No results were available at time. The boys and girls Eress each had difficult seasons, as each team finished below .500 and n comneither qualified for petition. eighth-grade- By DALE J. Im pretty happy, smiled Angela, because the girl who came in second is a good speller. The pretty blonde noted that her entire family was able to sec her win, except her mother, who fifth-grade- r, was kind of surprised. Angela, who confessed to being nervous about competing in the Granger School District finals on March 12, said two hours of study would be necessary to maintain respectibility in the next spelling bee. (See story in this issue.) Elementary and junior high school students both compete in the same contest, which isnt fair, according to Copper Hills principal Sheryl Benson. In the district spelling bee, everyone is on the same level, said Benson. Thats usually a stumbling block for grade school students. Copper Hills recently announced their PTA reflections contest winners. In the art division, fourth-grade- r Jacob Nordgren won the top prize. THURSDAY, MARCH 19, 1967 In the Granite School Districts spelling bee held for elementary and junior high school students on March 12, two junior high students won top honors. Heidi Wiskerchen of Bennion Jr. High was the champion and Kennedy Jr. Highs Jason Rider was the runner-up- . They will both compete in state competition on April 10. The Magna area had eight spellers vie for the title, seven from elementary schools and one from Hunter Jr. High. Brockbank Jr, Highs winner, Melanie Knighton, was apparently never notified of the contest and did not compete. She didn't ever get the letter, said Brockbank principal Mike Bennett. Fm not sure why it didnt get to Orchard Elementarys Rich Hawkes made it to the eighth round and spelled seven correct, while Hunter Jr. Highs Erin Moultrie lasted to the sixth round and spelled five words right. Wendy Witby of Lake Ridge Elementary spelled four correct in five rounds. Charles Burtron of Hillside Elementary notched three correct words in four rounds. Copper Hills Angela Gilbert spelled two words right in three rounds and Lynnette Tumer of Magna Elementary lasted two rounds and spelled one word correctly. Tonya Fairchild of Webster Elementary lasted longer than any other area hopefuls, as she spelled eight words correct, too, before being disqualified on a miss. Tonyas section was probably the most competitive, as it lasted 11 rounds; she made it into the ninth. But speaking as the Ill r third-grad- Rins-chote- fifth-grad- Katie Deakin claimed third George, a fourth-grade- r, award. Sixth-gradcame in second.
