Area residents score at state fair Two father and son photography teams led the list of talented Magna and West Valley residents who brought home awards from the Utah State Fair which closed last Sunday. Father John M. George of Magna won the Professional Landscape d category with a lovely shot of a coastline, plus took second place in the Nature entries, and his son John M. George, 11, placed third in the Young Amateur Unclassified category with a sparkling waterfall. Father Phil Gammell of Magna placed fourth in the Professional d Portraiture class with a study of LDS actor Gordon Jump, and his son Fred, 8, won the Young Amateur Landscape division with a startling shot of Yellowstone Parks Old Faithful geyser. Both fathers work at jobs and blue-tinge- light-hearte- are successful free-lanc- e photographers on the side. Both sons have taken pictures for several years and use 35mm cameras like the pros they are. The Georges live at 3170 South 8490 West and young John is in the sixth grade at Magna Elementary. The Gammells live at 3768 Centennial Rd. and Fred is in third grade at Copper Hills Elementary. John and his father also won ribbons at the State Fair last year in the same categories. Freds whole family takes pictures and his brothers Jamie and Jason also entered landscapes in the Young Amateur division this year. Other area winners in the Photography contest were Westly C. Jensen, West Valley, who placed second in Professional Landscape and first in the Professional Nature; Don Evans, West Valley, who took Portrait rst place in the Pro-Aass; Jerry Williams of Magna, Honorable mention in Pro-ACreative Art : Curtis D. Hansen, West m John M. George and his son John M. Georgell garner fair awards m Valley, honorable mention, Amateur Action; Pearl McPartland, West Valley, honorable mention, Amateur Landscape, and Brian Knighton, West Valley, who placed fourth in Amateur Portraits. In the Home Arts department, Jeanne Petty of 5519 West Kathleen Ave., West Valley, took the Candy Sweepstakes award. A sweepstakes award is given to the person winning the most ribbons within a class. There are 15 categories of candies and Mrs. Petty took blue ribbons in six of them. Other Home Arts sweepstakes winners included Laurie M. Gustin, West Valley, for a wedding dress in the Clothing, Fabric, division, and Kathy Trulsen, Kearns, champion baker. In the Fine Arts department, Paul Busenbark, West Valley, won the Grand Prize award for a glass piece. Other area winners were Robin Van Wagoner, West Valley, first place, amateur Ukraninian eggs; Loralee Johnson, Kearns, first amateur metal flatware; place, Shannon Smith, West Valley, first place, hand built clay object; and Oleta Kingery, West Valley, first place, Professional Ukrainian eggs. Karen Parker of Magna won Best in Show for advanced dolls in the Crafts department. Tina Powell, West Valley, was Best in Show for Junior Division Crafts. Branden took first in Showmanship and won a Best in Show at silver platter for the Salt Lake County fair in Murray last month. That is quite a feat for who bought his first rabbits just ten months ago. The son of Dale and Judy Greenland, Branden is in fifth grade at Copper Hills Elementary. Pigeon breeding is a hobby with third H took the Candy Sweepstakes at many devotees, among them many area men. In the pigeon show Pete Stratis of Magna took Best Young 4-- H Burmingham Roller, and John Martindale of Kearns won Best Young Fantail. Don Evans of West Valley swept the awards for racing homing -- fair. I Best of Breed, Best pigeons Young, Best Old, and Best Young Opposite Sex. Eugene Saxton of Kearns took Best of Breed and Best Old for the West of England Tumbler, and Russlia Saxton of Kearns was awarded Best Young Opposite Sex in that same breed. The Farm Bureau Cookout King contest drew contestants from all over the state. Earl Anthony of West Valley placed second in the Park category, and James Voorhees of Kearns bagged first place in the Lamb category with his Texican Lamb recipe. Heat program feels crunch As a result of financial constraints and anticipated Gramm Rudman cuts, the Heat Program hot line 1 has been telephone number disconnected. Heat Program this year will have to contact their local Social Service Agency, according to Susan Gail Larsen, program director. Brochures will be available in all Social Service Offices this month, Stated Larsen. Applications for the elderly and handicapped will be taken after October 15. Utah citizens wanting to find out about the States Auditions set for Gershwin production Salt Lake Repertory Theatre will audition performers for its concert production, Rhapsody In Blue at 141 Regent St. 5 from 6 (downstairs) September 9 p.m. Cakl backs are scheduled for September 26. The concert will be staged at Symphony Hall October 29 - 20 and November 12 13. Performers should come to the audition prepared to sing two different styles of music. An accompanist will be provided. Artistic director Joanne Parker said she will be looking for strong voices with power and intonation, soloists as well as choral. The theatrical concert will include excerpts from George Gershwins most popular works, including Porgy and Bess, Girl Crazy, Lady Be Good, Of Thee I Sing and many others.
