Some people like my dogeral and some actually enjoy my sports slants. I have received three sincere compliments in the past five years. Some have the conviction that excessive literary production is a social offense, and thats why I always keep my columns short. Yet, the critics still howl; some with laughter and some with pain. I write for enjoyment, but also to give the critic something to chew on; to put it in rhyme: "Ill write, because Ill give You critics means to live ; For should I not supply The cause, the effect would die. You should know that a bad article takes much time and effort; as much effort to write as a good one and comes as sincerely from the authors soul. If youre going to write anything worthwhile, you have to sweat. How would you know, you say? You never wrote anything that was really alive. Youre right, you know, for it is written: He does not write at all whose poems no man reads. (Martial) So far, in my writing, I have been able to draw from memory. I write about things that I remember that Im not sure are true. Some consider my writing talent to be small. Some judge my lines to be incorrect. I agree, but am not troubled. I would that the dishes on the dinner table please the guests rather than the cook. And so, I write for myself, and for those few who claim to appreciate my lines. Do you call me a writer or a poet? They call some men fathers who never earned the title. Could I, with the same logic, be called a writer? If anyone who is on the team can be called an athlete, then those who pen their thoughts perchance can be called writers. Most of the authors who gain the admiration of the public are those of old time; those who are dead. Let me be mediocre and still live a while. Death is too high a price to pay for a little literary praise. It is my considered opinion that sports writers are the worst of all penmen. They exaggerate with abandon and often paint an untrue picture; one that makes chicken salad where only chicken feathers exist. Writers of sports seem best to be able to make an ordinary event into an epoch. They can turn a misjudged fly ball into a heroic home run with a few f Beks of the pen. I once read the story of a half back who ran eight yards to score the winning touchdown. The sports writer made the jaunt seem like a deceptive dance through a mine field. In talking to the ball carrier, he confessed that the run covered only 20 yards and was made successful when the defensive safety fell down. Such is the power of the pen when it flows towards embellishment. Some wordy writers can turn an ordinary athlete into a living legend. Actually, I have great respect for those who can read and write. I tried to join the Society for the Advancement of Good English, but they told me to practice a little more. So, Im practicing on you. How do you Bke it? SIMON SAYS: A ball player could go to college and learn to be a sports writer, but what writer could ever be a ball player? Of all the arts in which the wise excel, Natures chief SIMON SAYS: masterpiece is writing well. Teacher to Parent Helping your child succeed by Betty Condie President, Utah Education Association High school students spend less than one percent of their time reading, according to experts. They tell parents to encourage reading by turning off the TV. That is sound advice. Realistically, however, we know youngsters will watch a certain amount of RV. Its important to use that TV viewing time to best advantage. Instead of fighting TV constantly, learn to use it to promote learning. Television can motivate children if it doesnt dominate the childs free time and if it is used to promote active learning. Here are some learning techniques to try while viewing programs that interest your child: Improve phonics skills by asking your child to write words containing certain sounds or by keeping a tally of the number of times he hears certain sounds. Grammar skills can be sharpened by listening for nounds, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, or other parts of speech and call them out. Also, try listening for grammatical errors. Youll hear more than you might think. Vocabulary exercises include jotting down a few words you hear that you think your child has not yet learned. After the program, as you talk, discuss the list of workds and make a game of figuring out how they were used. To imporove comprehension, help your child recall sequences of events in stories and cartoons. Ask what happened first, second, etc. Discussing a program with your child will carry over into reading comprehension. Many studies show that viewing educational television programs has a greater value for children if parents discuss programs with them. Spoken language is our principal way of learning language, and a childs experience with the spoken language aa televsion can be valuable if we look for the lessons it provides.
