DeButts of Hercules Aerospace Products Group and Presidential Committee member Dr. Gene Covert at Hercules Training Center discuss the shuttle Challenger accident. Presidents committee member speaks BY VICKI CROCCO Last Wednesday Dr. Gene Covert visited the Hercules Training Center. He is a full time consultant to Hercules and heads the physics in M.I.T. at department Massachusetts. He was here discussing his 120 days on the presidents committee to investigate the shuttle Challenger accident in January of this year. - Dr. Covert gave a lecture to his fellow engineers at the Hercules Training Center on the specifics of malfunction and the joint ..the it failed to facilitate. He made it clear that he felt the reason the problem never surfaced before the flight was due allegedly pushing on the middle management level. Although he refused to give names on the record, Dr. Covert explained it was .sort of like when you were in school and you had to go to your teacher and you werent prepared. Im sure you remember the feeling, so you put it off. Now you had even more reason to not go, you felt bad for not seeing him in the first place, but even worse for procrastinating. said, I negligence in He dont think the this case was intentional. It was humans being human. Dr. Covert explained the role he and his committee members filled was to gather and interprete all information available concerning the Challenger accident then report the findings concisely. He said, I think I would emphasize this was a technical group ... and based on technical problems they tried to face it in an open way without pre judging and tried to make an inquiry in such a way that the general public can get the feeling of its directive, a clear idea of what happened. Dr. Covert said, It (the report) is not a political solution to a technical problem. The report is available for sale at the govenment printing office. Asked how difficult it was gathering information from the, companies involved Dr. Covert When you have a commented, mandate from the president it tends to help. Engineers are in the process of redesigning and testing the shuttle scheduled for completion in under a year. When asked if a year was time enough to get the bugs out of the new design Covert agreed there was never time enough to check everything statistically to the point of zero risk. He added, I believe as Admiral Truely said, make the system safe, not soon, I believe their goal is to fly and fly safely. Dr. Covert who has been involved with test flights for the past twenty years of his career is opposed to laymen flying shuttle missions at all. He sees the missions as strictly experimental and would like to see the practice stopped. He stressed time for training laymen for all pos sible proceedures was inadequate and more importantly time to assimilate the ramifications of the risk factor is not enough. When asked how he felt about his contribution on the committee he said it was very reassuring to know, Dr. Fletcher said he was going to adopt all of the committees recommendations. Old newpapers help library get funds County residents can help the library turn old newspapers into new books by depositing used newsprint in depositories located at designated Smiths Food King stores and four count library branches. Individuals, local groups, clubs and organizations are encouraged to assist in the project by depositing bundled newspapers in collection bins located at Smiths Food King, 4660 South 4000 West ; Whitmore Library, 2197 East 7000 South; Holladay branch Library, 2150 East 4800 South; West Valley Branch Library, 2880 West 3650 South; and Kearns Branch Library, 5350 South 4220 West. A design company from our neck of the woods has been playing an important role in the exploration of the sunken Titanic two and a half miles below the waves off the coast of Greenland. Alvin, the submercible and Jason Jr., the robot had some of their electronics designed and manufactured by Colnek Systems Engineering located at 21st South and 3400 west. Tom Hilton president of Colnek Systems spoke excitedly Thursday about eh results so far of the five days of tests. Not a single systems failure yet. There may be up to 15 more days of tests before they wrap things up. The site of the Titanic was discovered last year but exploration has become much easier with the help of Jason Jr. which is equipt with a color 35 mm camera as well as a color video TV camera mounted on it and its own propulsion system all operated by remote control. Dr. Robert Ballard heading the expedition for the Office of Naval Research is reported to be, so excited he cant stand There dont seem to be any but pleasant surprises for the explorers. The stern of the ship thought to be all but destroyed by the inpact with the ocean floor was found mangled but identifiable. All other tests are said to be, going off without a hitch. Alvin, the submercible is a battery operated titanium sphere 7 feet in diameter reported to be, rather cozy for three people, everyone takes showers before going down, said Mr. Hilton. It takes two and a half hours to dive down to the site where the scientists spend about five hours collecting data and spend two and half hours coming up. They land Alvin on the upper deck of the Titanic and let Jason Jr. do the running around and data collecting. it. papers, after citizens Photographs show the worms are Organizing for the meeting set O.K. the fona of the ancient teak wood, most of get 7 p.m. at Cyprus High at 29th July the wood on ship exhibits worm holes. School. The crew plan to recover and surface a piece of it to examine closer. Apparently the brass work as well as the crystal has suffered very little over the years. The chandliers in the grande ballroom along with other brass and crystal fixtures are in top shape. It seems there are only three weeks a year when the northern waters of the Titanic site are warm and calm enough to navigate. Since Jason Jr. is doing such a good job this year hes sure to go back new, improved and all grown up next year. Mr. Hilton explained that Jason Jr. would probably grow up dropping the Junior when more capabilities are added to him. The crew affectionalty refers to him as Jay Jay. Although the electronic workings were built here in Utah, Alvin and Jason Jr. got thier chassis from Hold Woods Oceangraphics Institution in Massachusetts whos . engineers are overseeing the operations in the Atlantic. Also aboard the main ship is engineer Brent Miller of Colnek Systems Engineering, who resides in Sandy .Utah when hes not on the high seas. Colnek Systems Engineering employes 28 people and focuses on development of deep sea equiptment electronic systems mainly for the Office of Naval Research. Tom Hilton wanted to make that clear. He gets a lot of calls asking if thier outfit are a bunch of treasure hunters. Hilton says it would be very difficult to treasure hunt on this particular site because of the frigid waters and the extreme depth, but notes piracy waters isnt in international discouraged. Though Hilton doesnt hunt treasures, hes delighted to help in finding the Titanics treasures. ,1 Jim Meeks, presents alarming statistics on the tailings contents.
