He looked where the block had been and saw a large spider. His smashed the frightening thing with a hammer. Thinking the bite might be1 poisonous, the two took some Rocky Mountain spotted fever. But, as with spiders, misconceptions about ticks are plentiful. Its not true, Allred says, that the head of a tick, if left imbedded in the skin, will cause damage. Its no worse, than a sliver. The best way to remove a tick is to grasp it with eyebrow tweezers as close to the skin as possible and pull it out. Allred cautions that the body of an engorged tick should not be squeezed. If the tick is infected, its toxins could be forced into the bloodstream. Another dangerous arthropod is the flea, says Allred. We have a veritable powder keg brewing on the Wasatch Front, he says, rodents such as squirrels and the Norway rat are carriers of bubonic plague. The fleas they carry can ingest blood that carries the plague. If the fleas are transferred to , humans, so is the plague. If caught early, both bubonic plague and Rocky Mountain spotted fever can be effectively treated. So er remains to Dr. Dorald Allred, director of the Bean Life Science at Brigham Young Museum University. Allred managed to identify it as a wolf spider, truly a monster, only slightly smaller than a tarantula. He old the workers its bite is painful but harmless. ' The tarantula itself, which lives as a recluse in Utah, is also harmless, Allred says. The sting of a wasp or hornet is more painful than a tarantula bite. Allred actually recommends the fuzzy spider as a pet, because it doesn't like to bite. On the other hand, the black widow is extremely poisonous for its size. Its venom is 15 times as toxic as that of a prairie rattlesnake, but the spider cant inject a large amount of toxin. An average persons reaction to a bite would include nausea, nerve reaction such as difficulty breathing, and general malaise. Death is rare. Helping people understand insects, other animals and plants they encounter is part of the Bean Museums purpose, Allred says, and he and the museum staff are happy to answer questions. He suggests, though, that spiders be captured for identification rather than smashed. Most people who visit the museum are unaware of what goes on behind the walls that display the trophies and educational exhibits, he says. Over 300,000 plants and 1.5 million animal specimens represent collections where research is being Allred. But people should always be ' alert to the possibility." Other scientists at the museum can give advice about toxic plants, Allred says. For example, the poinsettis and the mistletoe, used to brighten homes at Christmas, are poisonous if eaten. So are the castor bean, a decorative plant used in yards, the philodendron and the dieffenbachia, grown in homes. Rhubarb stems are good to eat, but the leaves are poisonous. split-lea- f Some of the experts at the museum and their fields of study are: Stan Welsh and Kaye Thorne, who manage a collection of virtually all the plants in Utah; Stephen Wood, a world authority on bark beetles which can wipe out entire forests; Richard Baumann, stone flies; Clyde Pritchett, mammals; Clayton White, birds; Wilmer Tanner and Jack Sites, reptiles; Dennis Shiozawa, fish; and Lee Brithwaite, shells and marine animals. , Mexican food is very popular these days and tacos are far and away the most popular Mexican dish. It was while still at Columbia the Miller hit upon the idea of producing some sing along" albums - which was the genesis of his popular television program.
