Albarrancan recall that hot summer day in 1966 as if it were yesterday. Two companies of the 25th Infantry Division moved out at daylight, headed for a heavily wooded area about 40 miles from Cu Chi, South Vietnam. ' Their target was an area snaked with enemy tunnels, pockmarked with bomb craters and home to uncounted Viet Cong enemy soldiers. - Albarrans platoon was bringing up the rear of the jfirst company when the enemy trap was sprung. Claymore mmes thrown from the jungle exploded in their midst even as Small arms fire began stitching , its way through the Army Infantrymen. u t I remember the explosion, being hit, and trying to get up again, Albarran knows today that he couldnt have stood up then, even if the enemy had fled after the ambush. For the Claymore explosion that had driven him to the jungle floor had ripped off both of his legs in the process. Armando Albarran was destined to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. But before you offer him any sympathy, consider that hes made more of a success of his life in the last 19 years than most able-bo- died people. And in the process of building a career, a family and a future, hes helped countless other seriously disabled veterans along the way. Those are but a few of the reasons why Armando Albarran of San Antonio, Texas, has been named 1985 Disabled Veteran of the Year by the Disabled American Veterans According to Chad Colley, national commander of the million member organization of wartime disabled veterans, Albarrans selection tor his the award is based on dedication and commitment to helping disabled veterans lead lives ect. of dignity and Further, his efforts to remove self-resp- obstacles in the workplace and insure full accessibility for disabled veterans on the job has set a national model for enlightened employment practices. Albarran brings the toughest kind of credibility to his job as a vocational rehabilitation specialist with the San Antonio Veterans Administration (VA). The legless pants and wheelchair mark the dues hes paid. But only a record of the help he provides his fellow disabled veterans marks the skill he brings to the job. Currently, he maintains an active case load of more than 200 individuals and travels over 1,000 miles a month in the San Antonio region. Besides providing direct couseling services to disabled veterans and their families, he also visits training sites at college campuses and helps veterans with everything from filling out forms to obtaining needed medical services. He goes wherever his help is needed because, The worst thing that can happen is not to be able to assist a veteran. And he stays by their side as they struggle through rehabilitation and recovery because "Its friends helping friends.
