Jolie Hill and Brooke Dangerfield were presented $325 each by the PTSA scholarship by Mrs. Gerti White, President of the PTSA. This was also a highlight of the evening. Robert Williams was next on the program and presented the Sterling Scholar Awards. Kay Davis received the coveted Ann Pherson award for 1985. The recognition as outlined in the program reads: Ann Pherson Award is for building the spirit of achievement and activity has been a lifetime driving force for Ann S. Pherson. When Cyprus was in need of a sense of pride, Miss Pherson, as a student, sponsored a clean-u- p campaign that culminated in the Clayton. They went to Evan Mattingly, Brian Blight, Stefan Kalmelid and Wendy Fatzinger. When the school spirit needed a boost, there was Miss Pherson again, sponsoring cheerleading clinics and an interclass competition that has become known as Song and Yell. Vitally concerned with the academic growth of Cyprus as well as its activities she made Cyprus part of her life. She helped to shape Cyprus tradition and achievement, and for her role in the Pirate heritage, we shall honor each year in her name the outstanding senior girl of Cyprus High School. She came to Magna in 1919, attending Webster Elementary and Cyprus High School. Mrs. Poulsen was active in MIA in the old Magna Ward, where she met Loren Poulsen. Next the Hugh Cannon Memorial Award was presented by Ned Winder. The award reads: Thirty-si- x years ago, Hugh Cannon was of studentbody Cyprus High School with a scholastic record of high honors. He was well liked by his fellow Pirates and best known for his shy smile quiet humor. He graduated June 5, 1944, and 12 weeks later, Oct. 23, 1944, he was killed when his ship went down in the second battle of the Philippine Sea. In memory of an outstanding alumnus of our school, and to perpetuate love and appreciation for Bird, Brenda Blanchard, Brian Blight, Jared Bradshaw, Paul Hardware Company. In 1927 they moved to Anaconda, Montana where work was available at the Anaconda Copper. Here he learned the carpenter trade. In 1931, due to the depression the Poulsens moved back to Magna. With little work available, he again moved his family to St. George where he worked with the CC camp in 1936 they moved to Garfield, Utah and secured work with Kennecott Copper Company, where he worked until retirement in May 1969.
