Catten. Good-Groomin- d. s. mined Outstanding Honor Student By KAREN E. HILL Daniel Thacher, a senior at Cyprus High School, has been chosen to represent his fellow students at a Salute To Excellence seminar in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Daniel was sponsored by the president of Smiths Food King and selected by the administration of Cyprus High for this honor. He will attend a dinner in honor of the 350 students chosen from all over the country and be spoken to by suc cessful people from all walks of life. The object of the event is to encourage these young people to continue to strive for excellence in their lives. In addition to this honor Daniel has received a $400 scholarship from the Tooele branch of the Utah Elks and a four year scholarship to the University of Utah. He plans to study computer science at the university. At Cyprus, in addition to being an excellent student, Daniel was selected as the most valuable player on the water polo team and has served as the captain of the swimming team. Daniel is a member of the Midvalley Bible Church and is active in the youth club. He will be attending a camp this summer for High school Achievers. Daniel is the son of James and Pauline Thacher and is one of three sons graduating this spring. Daniel has a brother graduating from the University of Utah Medical School and another receiving a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Cyprus bolds honor's The 1984 Cyprus Senior Awards Banquet was held on Wednesday, May 18th at the Distinctive Catering. Dr. Elwood Clayton served as the host with welcome remarks and introduction of guest done by Scott Whipple. Miss Janeen Batt gave the blessing. Five School Service and Leadership awards were presented by Dr. Elwood Clayton. Receiving the awards were Sandi Barkley, Lynn Langford, Melinda Taylor, Kristy Robinson and Merilu Wilkey Melanie Pickering. and Michelle Orchard received the PTSA Scholarships presented by Jerry Huber. Bob Fox then presented Lani Aposhian and Walter Boyden with the Kiwanis Award. The Lions athletic scholars were Dan Thatcher and Tauna Anderson, presented by Robert Williams. They are as follows: John Griffiths, Speech and Anita Drama; Mathematics; Lynn McDaniel, Langford, Lani Aposhian, Dan Thacher, Science; Cynthia Cummins, Foreign Language; Tony Taggart, Margaret Evans, Homemaking; Rick Flack, Visual Arts; Melisa Metcalf, English; Mia Clark, Music; Melinda Taylor, General Scholarship. Business Education; Social Science; The two most honorable awards presented at Cyprus are the Ann Pehrson and hugn Cannon awards. The Ann Pehrson award is in the honor of Miss Ann Pehrson who started the first Song and Yell at Cyprus 50 years ago. Ann Pehrson was there to give away the award in her honor. Receiving the award was Melinda Taylor. Cannon award is The Hugh presented in the memory of Hugh Cannon who was the Vice President at Cyprus in 1942. On October 23, 1944, he was killed in World War II.
