Serendipity Sports By Dale Simons NOSTALGIA When football season rolls around it always brings hopes for a great year and dreams of past triumphs. The budding player sees himself scoring from 80 yards out and yesterdays star dotes on his memories. I was thinking back 36 years. One of the greatest athletic teams even to wear the blue and gold at Pirateville was the 1944 State Championship football team. Remember how they thumped on everybody. They whipped most teams soundly and embarrassed the rest. That was a happy Fall in Magna. Not only did we have the clean crisp air to breathe and the beauty of the turning leaves, we also had the sweet savor of football victories. As a Junior High kid I watched most of the practices and all of the games. My guts were in a knot if the score was close and I felt great pride when Cyprus won. Guess what? They won every week. Those were good times. I can still remember the players as if it were yesterday. The Ends were Myron Philpot, Russ Mandetes and Lowell Wilson. The Tackles were Gus Klekas and Alan Bertock. The Guards were Sam Hill and Kay Reid. The Centers were Dick Monson and Mervin Reid. The Blocking Backs were Spitz Papanicholis and J. T. Coon. The Fullbacks were Joe Rainaldi and Lee Kirk. The Running Back was Bud Knight. It was a great team that had size, speed and finesse. The town got fired up and backed the team. There were great crowds at the games and an occasional fight in the streets. Bill Cowley, who later became Davis County druggist, was the coach and a dam tough task master. It was great to be from Magna and to be a Pirate Booster. The year ended with Cyprus 0 for the State Championship. beating Lehi Ill tell you that was one big year. 28-2- REMEMBER W HEN It took three men to tackle Joe Rainaldi; Myron Philpot was a crushing Defensive End; Bud Knight was a great Breakaway Runner with very nifty moves; the Buck Lateral was one of the trickiest plays in football.
