Ken Spiers Inspires Audience By JOE EVANS MAGNA Be a Pearl of a Girl was the theme for a Dear To My very special, Heart February night held was an annual meeting for the 14 and 15 year old young women (Mia Maids) and their mothers, of the Magna Utah Stake. Jamie Anderson, Laurel president of the Magna Ward, 25. This conducted the program, under the direction of Barbara Inkley, 1st counselor in the Stake Young Women presidency. Pres. Tom L. Bird, Stake President, presided at the gathering. Following the in- troduction of the theme by Stacey Thomas of the Pleasant Green 1st Ward, Lisa Kendall and Kristy Robinson of the Pleasant Green 4th Ward sang Where Love Is. The featured speaker was the noted writer and teacher Verda Mae Christensen of Salt Lake City. Having served as a Young Women General Board member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints for 11 years, as well as being active in numerous political and civic affairs, Mrs. Christensen has enjoyed many personal experiences that make her an appropriate example of honorable womanhood. She spoke to the young women about the Lordss law of Chastity, and how it affects the lives of girls and women. She presented five ground rules for safety in dating: 1. Dress modestly, 2. Kiss sparingly, 3. Touch carefully, 4. Avoid contact, horizontally and, 5. Decide, previously, that your answer to all Todd Richards Todd Richards, while excelling in track as a pole vaulter and sprinter in the 100 yard dash and 440 yard relay, has found school dramatics an exciting challenge. While at Brockbank Jr. High, he had parts in Oklahoma, Joy, and Fiddler on the Roof. He also assited with the lighting and sound system for programs and assemblies. When hes not involved in such activities, he has been active on the Pirate Swim team. As a member of the State Championship team, he placed 6th in the individual medley and 1st in the 100 yard breast sroke. Todd is a sophomore at Cyprus. He has served as Deacon's Quorum President and Troop 258 and good personal friends. They are young men of great individual talent and ability who have found along the Eagle Trail, opportunities to excel in a variety of areas where their respective interests and abilities have become readily evident. MAGNA Great traditions dont just happen, they are made to occur over Eagle tivities including sports Nowhere was this more evident than at the Wards court of honor held February 26, to honor three young men who have become the latest of succession of outstanding youth of that ward to earn Routings highest rank ... the Eagle Award. The young men, Sterling Gordon Cloward, son of Gordon and Beverly Howard; Todd Richards, son of Joe and Gloria Richards; and Ken Jensen Speirs, son of Mrs. Jeana Speirs are all members of and craftsmanship. Hiis is reflected in his favorite merit badges among the 37 that he has earned. They are sports, athletics and woodwork. In his church service, he is an active Priest and has earned his On My Honor and Duty to God Awards. His future plans include college and a mission for the L.D S. Church after high school graduation. Ken has a family tradition of his own that has helped him along the way. He is the third son in the Speirs family to achieve the Eagle Rank. 3--A Teachers secretary. Among his favorite experiences in scouting are the snowmobile trip to Yellowstone National Park and several Summer camps and of course, receiving his Eagle badge. He has earned 27 merit badges. Sterling Cloward Sterling Howards most memorable merit badges include cycling, archery, rifle and shotgun shooting and emergency preparedness. These reflect his love of the outdoors and, not a comsurprisingly, mitment to rugged individualism. He is a Senior at Cyprus High School where he is Academic Vice President on the Seminary council in s iv-v- y iY ( Underneath his easy going, affable nature, however, is a fierce commitment to competitive excellence in all that he applies himself to . His determination to reach his full potential has led him along the Eagle Trail. He has earned 26 merit badges as well as the On Mv Honor and Dity to God Awards He is the ward representative on the Stake Youth Committee and has served as Secretary and 1st Counselor of the Deacons Quorum, 1st Counselor of the Teachers Quorum and 2nd assistant in the Priestss Quorum. Appropriately, before a young man can fully qualify for the Eagle rank, he must complete a service project. He must originate the idea and be responsible for the work from beginning to end. Only then can he prove himself fully equal to the responsibility of being an Eagle. Sterling Cloward conducted a traffic and street sign survey for Salt Lake County Traffic works Efc- partment. He mapped the designated area and examined every sign for acceptable conditions and visibility. Ken Speris was responsible for the installation of a section of the sprinkling r 'X ; of the Cyprus Varsity Basketball team. Sterling is a hard working, modest young man who characterizes himself as a friendly meat cutter at Reams. and V ".y r A .f Todd Richards system at the Lake Ridge Ward house. Todd Richards made a folding service cart for use at the Stake house. In each instance, these young men were totally responsible for their project and its successful completion. Those present to honor these outstanding young men at the Thursday evening Court of Honor included Ronald M. Henline President of the Magna Utah East Stake, and former Bishop of the lake Ridge Second Ward, LaMar Maddy also formerly Bishop of that Ward, and the present bishopric, Bishop David Blanchard and counselors Alan Mcln-tir- e and Sharon Rushton. Others present included President Terry G. Ward of the Magna Utah East Stake Troop Committee, Neil Presidency, similarly honored for commitment to principles that mark them as examples for todays youth and leaders of our tomorrows. Geral Holladay, recipient of the Coveted Silver Beaver Award and guest speaker ; Efean Wood of the Ward counselor Elden Hodson. Many friends and family were also in attendance. Mike Mamales, livid Ma males, Mark Henline and Aaron Speirs accompanied the Eagle candidates and their parents to their seats of honor as a special escort. Following remarks, a slide display and presentation of the awards, those present were treated to pastries and peach punch. So Lake Ridge Second Wards tradition of scouting excellence continues to build as three very talented and capable young men take their places Sterling Cloward Westvale Presbyterian Church Schedule GRANGER Services Sunday, March 8, at the Westvale Presbyterian Church will begin at 9:30 a.m. with Sunday School. Classes will be provided for age nursery through adults. The Church service will commence at 11:00 a.m. Guest speaker is Walton Rath, Pastor Emeritus of the First Presbyterian Church of Salt Lake. The Junior Church children, ages five through the fourth grade will be excused following the scrip- ture reading for their Junior Church Service. There will be a bake sale St. Patrick days by the Westvale Presbyterian ladieson Saturday, March 14th from 10:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. Lunch will be served starting at 12:00 noon, the menu will include chili, rolls, salad, coffee, and dessert. ByALENE BLACK Many retired couples, widows and widowers of the Pleasant Green 4th Ward marked a bright spot in their lives at a dinner last Saturday, February 21st which was sponsored by the youth of the Ward. The young people, with Alle Christensen, as host and 1st assistant to the Priests Quorum Brad Olsen and Jeff Hutchings, Teacher and Efeacon Quorum presidents, respectively, and Steci Bird, Pam Turpin and Dalene Olson, Laurel, Mia Magna East Stake the Magna Stake, with their mothers and leaders, attend the Stake "Dear to My Heart Night. Seventy people were present. MIA Maids of Utah East Stake held their monthly baptismal ser- vices Saturday, February 28 at the Lake Ridge 5, 6, 7, and 8th ward house. Presiding at the service was Earl Asmussen of the stake high counsel and Ronnie Thompson con- ducted. Susan them stand in the back. Reesor and Beverly Jackson assisted with the music for the meeting. They are Heidi Stewart, Jason VanTassell, Connie Martinsen, Norman Louis Hyre, and Danielle Ann Lewis. Those who baptized and Beehive presidents, planned and prepared the turkey dinner and program for the Maid honored guests. Hie program consisted of: a piano number by Richard Cox, a violin and piano duet by Lori West and Pam Turpin and was held in the Relief Society the room, following delicious repast. Lucille Turpin, Vicky Petty, Margy Wadsworth, the Young Womens Advisors, and Bishop Stanley B. Petty helping the youth for this special occasion.
