Chess Corner By Richard Kenney The first U.S. international tournament, where those who participated could be awarded a grandmaster or international master title, was played in Pennsylvania from June 16 to 27. This tournament was unique. Until now a senior master who wished to earn either title had to play in a foreign tournament since the award tournaments were hosted by foreign countries. These tournaments must conform to strict regulations. For instance - there mustbe a minimum of three grandr masters playing in the tournament. For a grandmaster result, one must score out of 11 possible points. -- 8-- For an international mas- ter title one must score7-l- 2 out of 11 possible points. All this againstgrandmasters, international masters, and other masters who are playing for a title. Two of the three grandmasters, whoplayed, are Herman Pilnik from Argentina and Arthur Bisguier from the A grandmaster U.S. from Yugoslavia (whose name I do not have at present) was in the competition. Masters who sought titles included William Martz, Mednis, Kenneth Rogoff. and Andrew Soltis from the U.S. and Cavit Uzman of Turkey. Only through such strong tournaments as these can the outstanding masters in the United States hope to develop to their full potential. Such tournaments in the U.S. gives them a chance to earn a title. Before many could not hope for a chance at a title because of the time and expense involved in going to a foreign country to play.
