Penney through a apprenticeship in the dry goods business, a move to Colorado prompted by poor health, a butcher shop venture that faired, and a decade of establishing hi3 first dry goods stores. With his savings of $500 and a loan of $1,500, he had bought a d interest in the Wyo., branch of tlm Golden Rule, the chain store that had at first hired him as a clerk. He and his wife worked together, living in a windowless attic over the store, furnishing their room with packing crates, and often putting their little son to sleep under the counter. By 1910 their sacrifice had begun to pay off. Penney had bought out his partners and later opened additional stores. But on Christmas Day his wife died, leaving him with two young sons. The next two years were personally lonely but financially successful. The number of Penney dry goods stores grew to 40, then 48. In 1913, the J. C. Penney Company incorporated with headquarters in New York, and by the early 1920s it was one of the largest and most successful retail businesses in the nation, with stores in every state. Nobody had thought that stores could do so well. As the money rolled in, J. C. Penney gave credit to the Golden Rule. That was the basis with his emfor ployes, who were always called "associates. Store manager?, were given virchosen, carefully tual autonomy. The emphasis was on honesty, service and quality control. Mr. Penneys practical application of Bible teachings extended to his personal and civic lives as well. While serving as his companys president and then chairman of the board, he devoted a major share of his talents and fortune to religious and charitable activities, especially those for youth. In 1919 he married again, but his second wife died four years later, leaving him another son. Only three years after his third marriage the financial disaster came, and J. C. Penney was ready to give up. There at the sanitarium in 1931, he was certain he would never see another day. He wrote letters of farewell to his wife and eldest son, and waited for the end. Surprisingly, it didnt come. The next morning as he shuffled from his room, Mr. Penney heard singing in the mezzanine. He followed the sound and discovered a group of patients holding a prayer meeting. He began to meditate on the words of their e, low-payin- g Kem-mere- one-thir- cash-and-car- ry profit-sharin- g r, God Will Take Care of You. And as he prayed for that to happen, the weight of despair seemed lifted a turning point in his life. In the next few months, his physical and mental health returned, and he began taking the steps that were necessary for a new beginning. It was an uphill struggle, but in moments of crisis, Mr. Penney drew strength from a piece of paper that he would carry with him for the song, next 40 JOHNNY C. It contained a verse he had copied from the 91st Psalm: He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler. The verse from the Bible reinforced the realization that saved him: When I accepted the fact that that disastrous event had not destroyed any essential capacities of mine, I began to fight. Fighting kept me going on and going on kept me fighting . . . Turning to regular habits of prayer and Bible reading, he made Beat yesterday his motto. He never considered his beliefs outdated. To groups of business people, he said: The practice of Christian principles I considered necessary for lasting success when our business was started in 1902. But some men who did not follow them succeeded. It is my firm conviction, however, that . . . this complex economic system of ours now makes this practice a vital necessity. In my early life, one could put religion in one compartment of his life and hig business relations in another and be successful. But this is not true in the same way today. And to a dubious business analyst who asked the source of his success, he replied, I dont think it was the Golden Rule, I know it was.
