I understand that the Federal Reserve System, although a activity, is actually privately owned. Can you tell me who the major owners are? The 12 Federal Reserve banks, which are supervised by the Fed- eral Reserve Board, are public service corporations established by Congress to foster money and credit conditions suitable for sustained economic growth. Each commercial bank, which is a member of the Federal Reserve System, is required by statute to hold stock" in the Federal Reserve Bank of which it is also a member. But this "stock does not give the commercial, l.e., privately owned bank, the right of ownership that stockholders have in ordinary business corporations. |
